London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has openly labeled former U.S. President Donald Trump a "racist," asserting that Trump targeted him based on his ethnicity and religion. Khan’s statements highlight a long-standing tension between the two, dating back to Trump’s presidency, when Khan faced multiple criticisms from Trump. According to Khan, "if I wasn’t this colour skin, he wouldn’t have come for me," a claim he made while speaking on the High Performance podcast. Khan shared that Trump’s criticism felt personal, remarking, “He wasn’t coming for me because I’m five foot six. He’s coming for me for – let’s be frank – my ethnicity and my religion.”

Khan has long condemned Trump’s policies, describing them as “sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic, racist.” The feud between the two gained attention in 2017 when Trump challenged Khan to an IQ test, then accused him of a poor response to the London Bridge terror attack. In a subsequent insult, Trump called Khan “very dumb” and a “stone-cold loser who should focus on crime in London.” Khan has responded by accusing Trump of "hard-Right populism" and even sanctioned the now-iconic "Trump baby blimp" to fly during Trump’s diplomatic visit to the UK.

Khan’s critique of Trump extends beyond personal grievances; he views Trump’s influence on the global stage as deeply troubling. “What worries me though, it’s not about me and my family – it’s about the fact that he’s the leader of the free world,” Khan said. He expressed a sense of duty to speak out against Trump’s divisive policies. “This is the president of the USA, a country we all adore, love,” he continued, stressing that the U.S. could either be a source of “hope and love” or “hate,” depending on its leader’s choices.

Reflecting on whether he would challenge Trump again, Khan was unwavering. “Would I do it again? Absolutely, because you’ve got to speak the truth with power,” he stated, underscoring the global impact of America’s policies. Khan insists that, as Mayor of London, he has a responsibility to advocate not only for Londoners but also for people affected by U.S. policies worldwide.

Despite their contentious history, Khan extended a surprising invitation for Trump to visit London. "I would love Donald Trump, whether he wins or not, to come to London," Khan said, offering to show Trump the city's diversity and inclusivity. “Let me show him around our wonderfully diverse communities. Let me take him on the Pride march next summer. Let me take him to a mosque, let me take him to some of our diverse communities,” he continued, emphasizing the compatibility of Western and Muslim identities. Khan underscored that pluralism and respect for differences are integral to democracy, hoping to demonstrate that “it is perfectly compatible to be a Westerner and to be a Muslim” and that treating women with respect is essential for any leader.

Through this invitation, Khan extended an olive branch, suggesting that understanding and dialogue are possible despite deep disagreements. He believes that while society is diverse, “the joy of democracy” is found in its pluralism. In Khan’s view, disagreement can be handled agreeably, and even bitter rivals can seek common ground to appreciate each other’s perspectives.

Go to gay pride and visit mosques. lol Like we don't have any of that over here. Of course none of the diversity he highlight are actually traditional British culture. When do we go to eat bad food with white people who have bad teeth and speak funny?

And look at London now. A crime ridden dump.

Holding up London as a great example of Diversity is like holding up Jeffrey Dahmer as a great example of alternative diet plans.

Well as Samuel Johnson said:

"Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."

London is a fabulous city, one of the world’s greats.

Though those keen to bash Blighty would have us believe otherwise.

Yes, in better times that was true.

Now, it's a crime ridden dump.

Sorry, I mean culturally enriched. My bad.

No children shot in schools in the UK.

A knife's killing range is the length of an arm.

I would think people knew this.

Bad food? 50 years ago you were right. Nowadays - thanks to immigrants mainly - choice and quality of cuisine has greatly improved.

Bad teeth? Maybe but those braces and uniform pearly whites seen in the US mean that sunglasses are a necessity.

Speak funny? Now you are 'aving a larf?

No Sadiq, he went for you because you are a lying, inept, race baiting, hypocritical weasel.

I very much doubt Trump would waste any time with someone like Khan. Nor should he.

Yep, write off one of the top half dozen cities in the world because you don't like the mayor. I'm sure he's gonna do that. Maybe Trump might. I hope so actually, it'll just be another strike against him.

I'm surprised at you, Chomps. 'Blighty'? We now know that this is yet another example of cultural appropriation from our evil Colonial past.

An informal and often affectionate term for Britain or England, chiefly as used by soldiers of the First and Second World Wars (in the First World War, a wound which was sufficiently serious to merit being shipped home to Britain was known as a Blighty). The term was first used by soldiers serving in India, and is an Anglo-Indian alteration of Urdu bilāyatī ‘foreign, European’, from Arabic wilāyat, wilāya ‘dominion, district’.

Also, I think Johnson's famous quote should be amended for historical context, given that the ethnography of C18th London was almost exclusively Caucasian.

"Why, Sir, you find no White man or even, though it is a modern concept, no White woman, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a White man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."

Johnson's manservant, a former Jamaican slave named Francis Barber, left London pretty much as soon as he was able.

I think we can stick with Samuel Johnson’s actual words, they not I the least improved by your grievance motivated nonsense.

Trump doesn't eat olives. Try money.

I expect he would at least try them - dunked in bright yellow chemical "cheese" and then deep fried...

Frightfully sophisticated, and would give a new, umm, twist, to his farts!

Despite the categorisation of London as "crime infested" dump by some posters - whose recent experience of the UK capital city probably amounts to no more than a couple of hours every few years - London figures highly (top 20%) in many surveys such as the annual Berkshire Hathaway Safest Cities of the World and The Economist Intelligence Unit Livability Index, more often than not ahead of cities such as Bangkok, NYC and Paris. ahead of New York City, Tokyo, and Paris.

It's fine until you venture into the ghettos, places like Tower Hamlets. You wouldn't want to be white and walking alone around that sh hole.

The Bangladeshi 'community' there gave me a very warm welcome about 15 years ago when I was walking back to my Isle of Dogs room alone. 6 kind young men relieved me of all my possessions at knifepoint.

Maybe Khan can take Trump for a wander around Tower Hamlets after 9pm.
