Young Teacher Killed in Motorcycle Hit & Run, While Traveling to Teach

A 25-year-old teacher lost her life in an incident on Phetkasem Road, Prachuap Khiri Khan, while riding her motorcycle in heavy rain to catch a van to Hua Hin, where she taught her students.

 

Police from Kui Buri Police Station received a report of a collision between a pickup truck and a motorcycle on the northbound side of Phetkasem Road, kilometer marker 281+900, near Ban Nong Ta Suea, Kui Buri District. They arrived at the scene with rescue personnel from the Luang Por Nai Kuti Foundation.

 

At the scene, officers found the lifeless body of Ms. Thitirat, 25, lying face down on the roadside. Her black Honda motorcycle, registered in Prachuap Khiri Khan, was heavily damaged. Nearby, an Isuzu six-wheeled truck was parked with signs of damage, alongside motorcycle debris and a single women’s shoe.

 

A truck assistant stated that he and his stepfather had been driving from Surat Thani to Hua Hin to deliver goods when their vehicle broke down. They had parked on the shoulder of the road and set up warning signals to alert approaching traffic. During heavy rain, the assistant heard a loud crash and witnessed a pickup truck dragging a motorcycle underneath it, while its rider was thrown onto the road. The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene after dragging the motorcycle for approximately one kilometre.

 

Police investigations revealed that Ms. Thitirat was a teacher at a school in Hua Hin. She had left her home on a motorcycle to catch a van to her workplace. It is believed that she attempted to avoid the parked truck, only to be struck by the pickup truck from behind.

 

Authorities are working to locate the driver of the pickup truck to bring them to justice.

Not good that the other diver did a hit-and-run, but sounds like she killed herself by changing lane position without looking, in what appears to be from the breakdown lane into a lane of traffic.

Agreed... but its also incredible how few are able to predict the movements of others on the roads here. 

 

Approaching a parked truck, the pick-up driver completely failed to evaluate that the motorcyclist may attempt to ride around the parked truck and thus failed to allow any space. 

 

That said, as you pointed out, it appears the lady changed lanes into the path of the approaching pickup without looking. 

 

However, dragging the Motorcycle for 1km is the behavior of a deranged lunatic, and this leads me to wonder of the speed at which the Pick-up was approaching which ultimately may have contributed to the death of the lady.

 

Either way, such abhorrent actions by the driver needs severe punishment.

I'm not so sure about that, I think its more that they just don't care.  If I had to pick one word to describe Thai drivers, it would be selfish.

 

Take for example when traffic slows or stops because of some incident, road works or other.  Their first thought seems to be 'I will go around it' - instead of trying to find out what the obstacle is. We see this daily on the expressways for example where they head off down the hard shoulder. I've lost count of the times I've  been exiting left (properly) and almost been cleaned up by a driver doing just that! They then have the nerve to flash their lights and blow their horns at you!!! I drive on motorways in the UK almost every day when I'm in country - I've never come across a UK driver doing the same. Observing your left hand mirror as well as the right is a must in Thailand.

 

A number of years ago on a normal 2 lane (1 in each direction) road the traffic in front of me stopped. There was a slight left hand bend in front of me and I was about 5 cars back so I couldn't see why the traffic had stopped. I saw a pick up in approaching in my mirror at what appeared to be high speed.  Instead of slowing and joining the queue, the driver simply overtook all the cars, still moving at quite some speed and there followed a loud bang.  When the traffic eventually got moving it became clear that the obstruction was simply a car that was waiting to turn right and just waiting for oncoming traffic to clear.

 

The loud bang was the speeding pick up hitting the right turning car which was now on the move.  He could not see the reason for the obstruction anymore than I could. Why, would anybody in their right mind do that?

 

I see similar, less serious examples almost everytime I drive in Thailand and I just can't work out what such drivers are thinking. Its just pure selfishness and lack of mental capacity.

where do you get that?

That's a good road, half of a four-lane. Broad shoulder for motor cycles plus two lanes for vehicles. The broken-down truck would, I assume, have been on the shoulder so she would have pulled out into lane to her right still leaving a free lane for following traffic.

 

The distance to Hua Hin from where she was found is around 70km. That's a long commute by motorcycle.

Agreed... which was completely unforeseen by the pick-up driver...     As mentioned, so many drivers here seem completely unable to predict and anticipate the movement of others. 

 

When my Wife is driving and I suggest, careful, the car is about to change lanes - she thinks I'm mad, she seems not to pick-up on the little movements and lane positioning the other vehicle exhibits that belies their intention.

She was riding to a meeting spot to catch mini-van for the remainder of the journey.

 

Its extremely sad that someone showing such effort and dedication was lost in such an avoidable manner.
