Can a sidecar motorbike(saleng) be legally registered?

Featured Replies

Can a small motorbike with sidecar (eg honda click)be registered for the road legally,eg por ro bor with the sidecar attached? Some say yes, some say no..??

I don't think so..

As I understand it - to be road legal, side cars have to be factory fitted (such as the Tiger Retro 110 Sidecar).

That said - it hardly makes any difference, clearly authorities turn a blind eye to these contraptions, primarily because they are generally used by poor Thai's and it just seems to be 'culturally accepted' that the poor circumvent the regulations, or rather fly under the radar.

I've seen a family of foreigners on salengs in Rayong, but I also imagine if this became more common place we'd see people fined for their use.

I thing renewing the Por-Ror-Bor (compulsory insurance and tax) of such vehicles is carried out without informing the DLT of the modification.

I'm not 100% sure IF the DLT will officially approve such side-cars - its more a case of don't ask...

The word is you can't unless new and registered together, but I'd go to one of those yellow cog agent and see if they can do

No,we have 2 in our household if you renew the por ror bor and the bike has to  checked over you have to remove the side car and take the solo bike .it is just the solo bike that is registered. I have to remove  my sidecar every year, then put it back on again afterwards.if the bike is not yet 5 years old.no check is needed you can renew the port for bor no need to take the sidecar off.
