Do you choose where things go in your house?

I let my girlfriend say where things go.  Also her sister which is into feng shui.

 

8 years later:

 

Sofa facing sliding doors.  TV facing a wall where no one can sit to view it.  My office consists of a dining table and a hard wooden chair.  Of course, the power cable runs right across where people walk and hangs floating in the air a bit.  As I look at it now on the dining table there is saline solution and cat medicine (the cat died a year ago) a nasty Thai calendar just perches on the edge of the table.  2 bags of medicine and one box of medicine.  A chair?  On the chair there is a cat carry bag, two badminton rackets a picnic blanket, a stick on the wall cat shelf which broke immediately, and more. 

 

A noisy fish tank with pumps running 24.7.  Have you ever heard a motor rattling against a metal frame?  I have.  I hear it all day.

 

My favorite one is the microwave.  So much crap on top of it.  A plastic cup inside other plastic cups with chopsticks and straws.  Just so it falls every time one uses it.  Nice brown cloth for no reason other than overheating the microwave and of course plastic bags so it gets caught in the door each time.  Absolute classic.

 

How about you?  Do you spare the rod and let your girlfriend choose where things go where in the house?

I designed our living spaces to be my areas, and her areas. The indoor, outdoor kitchen and tv room is at one end, and the gym, our room/balcony at 2. floor and garage/toolhouse on the other end. Our building is 24 meter long. Best thing I have done in my life. Especially when the wind comes from the mountains, I hear nothing from the other end at all.

After 18 yrs together, and 3rd house, we kind of got it sorted out.

 

She dominated the bathroom of course, as I get a spot for razor, toothbrush & soap.  She has 3 different soaps, couple rubs, and 3-5 bottles of other crap.

 

Don't have a living room or dining room.  I dominate the foyer/entrance.  Drone & RC cabinet (tall & large), w/2 vid drones now dominate the low cabinet that was photos & collectibles.  With me other junks scattered about.  There's a hand off order for all of that.

 

She has multipurpose desk in bedroom, and I get 1/3 of the walled in closet 

I have to share my 1/2 of the bed, with the dog 

 

She has large area of eat in kitchen (main room of house) for her sewing.  Along with full control of laundry & storage, which runs the length of one side of the house.    Which means I haven't a clue where anything is, that I haven't used in the last month.

 

We both get to clutter up the carport, me with EVs, her with gardening supplies.  Also the garden lot & Greenhouse is all hers.

 

So I basically got 1/2 the bedroom, and shared kitchen access.  Call that 50 - 75 m² of the 800 m², of the 1/2 rai it all occupies.  

 

Sadly, neither on of us seem to be in control, as we serve the dog, master of the house

No. Where things go is by mutual agreement. Maybe you need to get a grip and assert yourself a bit more ?

Never ever give your wife/gf the authority to make decisions without your input. It sends a message that you are a pushover, and if you give them an inch, they will take a mile. My wife and I discuss all issues before we make a decision, but if there is an impasse and we can't agree, then I make the final call.

Grow a pair

     Spouse and I work together but I do most of the furniture arrangement and I design the custom built-in furniture for our projects, with his input.  I am a firm believer in 'a place for everything and everything in its place.'  I am also a believer in 'form follows function'--and trumps feng shui. 

     From your description, your living space needs improvement.  I suggest you take your girlfriend and tour some decorated model homes or condos.  I think you both need to be educated a bit in furniture placement and how rooms function--or don't.   Show houses and condos usually have good design elements and good use of space.  If you see a room you like, snap some photos with your phone--tell them you're touring a lot of projects and want to remember this one to circle back to and maybe purchase.  These tours will give you some idea of what is possible. 

    Take a hard look at your space and how you spend your time in it--then choose furniture and an arrangement of it that best fits your needs.  If you like to watch a lot of tv, for example, design your space for comfortable tv viewing.  That would include facing the tv directly with a comfortable sofa, side tables at hand for drinks/popcorn, and the tv at a good size, viewing height, and distance from the sofa.  It sounds like you need to start over with where your tv is placed.  

    Power cord management is important--both for safety and looks.  If you have a power cord snaking across a room, that indicates poor design.  Usually a design can be rearranged to eliminate this.  For those planning a new construction or renovation, think about where you will need outlets and light switches before you begin.  Have a furniture plan in mind, if possible, and note where furniture needing power outlets will be placed.   

     At our current project, I knew we would likely be floating an electric 3-seat sofa recliner in the middle of the living room, so I made sure there was a power outlet built into the floor right where the sofa would sit.  The power cords for the sofa, and also a floor lamp next to the sofa, are hidden under the sofa, rather than visibly, and unsafely, snaking across a walkway to a wall outlet.  We also have a home office space with custom built-in  furniture so we planned for power outlets to be where we needed them for a printer in a cabinet,  table lamps, computer, etc.   Do as much planning as you possibly can before construction.

     If a place is messy, it's usually one of two things--messy people living there or not enough storage to put everything away.  If you fall into the latter, start with getting rid of junk you don't need and then look at ways to increase your storage for what's left.  Stuff sitting all over the top of the microwave?  Look for a small, counter storage unit that fits around the microwave and provides some storage to neaten things up.  There are lots of storage selections for everything you need to store on Lazada and also at places like Index and Home Pro.

     Look for ways to add storage.  If your armoires don't go to the ceiling, large wicker baskets can be put on top of them to store things like Christmas decorations, extra linens, household/hardware stuff, etc.   Big, round wicker baskets with lids are also useful for storage if you have a free corner in a room.  IKEA makes big, rectangular upholstered ottomans with lids that store quite a lot.  We've used them several times.  Put a big tray on top and you have a coffee table that doubles as a foot stool--with storage to boot.

      Bathrooms often don't have enough storage but usually there is space for a small cabinet with drawers to slot under a wall sink.   If you have counter space, small baskets are also good to neatly organize the toiletries scattered all over the counter into one easy to get to container.  

     Life is short.  A nice, comfortable, well-designed place to live is important.  Believe me when I say you will feel better, and live better, in a space you have taken some time to design to fit your needs.  Get started and good luck.
