Can someone recommend a good quality Cocoa powder for drinking?

Unsweetened and without additives would be most preferable.

A brand name and where available would be most helpful.

Thank you.

I buy "Dutch". Claims is 100% . No detergents to aid dissolving/mixing in water. Sugar free.

Certainly tastes good for the various uses I put it to.

Nestle products are last on my list .

From where can I buy this product in Bangkok?

We use these to make our chocolate goodies, and get from Makro.  Comes in 2 bag packs.  Quality & inexpensive.  Most chains or baking supply shops should carry it.

I've had great results with Tulip brand.  My hot chocolate gets rave reviews.  You'll need heat and pressure to make a paste to use in hot chocolate.

From where can I find it in Bangkok?

Available in Bangkok?

My local Lotus'sssssssss is around Bt230. This is IMHO the best cocoa you can get for value for money.

You can also get some bargains but here's an example of a rip off. Add the delivery cost and you're paying close to double of what you can buy it for at Lotus. This is IMHO the best cocoa you can get for value for money.

Site maintenance came in before I could edit. The Lazada example is 400g so not a bad price. Get free delivery and it's actually a pretty good price. 400g is a lot. You don't need much depending on use of course. Hot chocolate not much. Brownies you need to use more obviously. I quite like just mixing a spoon full or two with a bit of condensed milk out of the can to make a very tasty chocolaty treat.

Here Dutch processed cocoa is always chosen because of its cheap price. It ends up in sweet cocoa or some kind of DIY chocolate sweet. Rather predictably, our members, as evidenced from similar threads in the past, think of chocolate as a candy for their sweet tooth.

But

“Dutched” Cocoa. Alkali-processed cocoa, commonly known as dutched cocoa, is not as healthy as regular cocoa powder. Dutched cocoa can have as little as half the phytonutrients of regular cocoa, but that just means you have to use twice as much to get a rich, chocolatey flavor.

Difficult to find natural cocoa in Thailand. Herhey's Natural is about it, and you get what you pay for. You can find it at Foodland or on Lazada. I buy it from Lazada because some vendors are a bit cheaper than Foodland.

I know the store bought stuff is crap, in reality, but easy and inexpensive.   Wife made some form cacao pods.  Once you had the real deal, you realize what store bought is lacking.

But it's a lot of work, small yield and not cheap, unless growing your own.  Her friend gave her a few pods.  What a treat that was and taste bud & eye opening :coffee1:

Every full size TOPS at least where I have it from (self taken picture below).

And I guess at the usual "Farang" shops (Villa, Foodland?).

A dark version.

Less cocoa butter as far as I know.

Tulip brand cocoa powder makes a great cocoa drink and is inexpensive. BUT, be aware of the caffeine and calcium levels it contains, not great if you have thyroid issues since they both lower the efficacy of thyroxine meds.

Thank you. I like the dark cocoa & chocolate too!

I saw Tulip have many varieties of cocoa powder...which one makes the best drinks? A higher cocoa butter percentage?

Anyone care to share their recipe?

Lazada has some natural non-Dutched options.

I don't understand why people want Dutched.

The health benefits are stripped from that process.

I think all 3 versions of 100% cacao powder have about the same % of coco butter, 10-12%

Other brands (more expensive), may give you about 20ish %.

Brown, Dark & Super Dark Chocolate ...

There is also a chemistry to using dutched & natural chocolate when baking.  Not a problem if following a written recipe by a professional.  If doing your own from scratch, and baking, you need to use the proper combination of baking powder or soda with the different cacao powders.

Dutched, use powder for better results.

Natural, use soda for better results.

Something us ex-bakers know.   Also some chocolates won't state if dutched or natural, but if stated 'unsweetened', it's a good bet it is natural.

A heads up for those, like myself, who make their own chocolate, using Coconut oil, cacao powder & sweetener, it's heavy caloric load.   Think I calculated 2 pieces of my chocolate, and small, is about 400 calories.

So I can munch on them, or have a complete healthy, filling meal :w00t:

Just ran out of coconut oil, so with that little tidbit, I think my chocolate making days are over :coffee1:
