Cessation is illegal, your Lincoln cost about 600k lives to make it so, supreme court declared it illegal.

The correct term is secession.

Please go on. The smugness will evaporate soon enough, after Trump and his appointees have put a wrecking ball through government.

You're fine if you are a rich Trump voter. Poor Trump voters are going to get thrown under a bus.

Are you so economically illiterate you don't realize tax cuts and tariff wars are going to add to the cost of living in America?

which is what the civil war was fought to stop, not to end slavery

I wouldn't like to offer an opinion on @Lacessit's smugness, not least because the smugness and associated triumphalism trumpeted by the MAGA campaign on here over the last couple of weekends has distorted the scale!

Perhaps (on the matter of the wrecking ball) they did vote for that, but it was not (we now learn) a majority, and I can't but wonder what they feel when they survey the debris of smashed and demolished health and social provision, and realise the scale of the task of recreating it, if indeed it can be!

You're assuming all that will come to fruition.

Well done, a masterpiece of evading the question I asked.

The turkeys voted for Christmas, they have not realized it yet.

I avoided nothing. You think what you want with your grandiose theories of things that may or may not happen.

They would have to pay a huge exit tax. They would also have to assume their proportionate part of the national debt. Population of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut. Rhode Island, Maine, New Jersey combined is around 41 million. Each person owes around $107,000. So it would come to around $4.4 trillion. This would be due immediately as a lump sum.

All federal government assets would have to be returned to the feds so anything not nailed down. Mineral rights do not convey. All federal proprerty remaining must be bought or leased. Ports, national parks etc. at fair market value. Federal waterways and such would have to remain the property of the USA.

The newly formed utopia of Douchebag Liberia would be in terrible shape. Not to mention they would never have the money to pay their way out anyway.

Well the problem is you  don't want gaps.

California really should be it's own country.

Texas too -- they've always wanted that.

It would be funny if the old USA was land locked from the Pacific.

Of course -- Alaska. I hear Russia wants it back. Let's make a deal!

With all your Putin rants you would hand him Alaska?

OK, I get it. This sounds sensationalist and it's obviously not something that if it ever happens will happen soon.

HOWEVER --

The fact that this is even being talked about is another sign of the seriousness of the situation of autocrat Trump coming back to power.

Why? Well, normal decent American presidents try to be presidents of ALL the states. Not just states where they have a lot of support. Trump has already shown a pattern of wanting to PUNISH states (and cities) with leadership and voters who oppose his extremist maga autocrat agenda.

I'm not saying this will really happen. Nobody can predict the future that way. But such split up of countries is actually not rare in world history, ancient and more recent.

As long as we're talking about the U.S. splitting up, personally I wouldn't want to join Canada even if Canada wanted to acquire U.S. states. I think new INDEPENDENT countries would be much better.

The Northeast for sure but also the Pacific Coast States.

This is dumb.  The left is losing their minds.

It is also a funny idea that now liberals want to have the states be independent and not interfered with. Then you suggest how about a federal republic where each state does what it wants and their heads explode. Not sure how the NE would react after 15 minutes goes by and they can no longer dictate to the people of other states how to live and what to drive.

Just to be clear...  Where is "here"?

And where was " there" I doubt Greenwich , New Canaan or Darien!$$

Another couple of fun ones....

All citizens would be subject to the exit tax as you would have to renounce your USA citizenship to leave.

All federal employees including the military would be terminated and lose their pensions.

All 401k holders would have to sell their stocks and cash out Any holdings in a taxable account would have to pay tax and what is left would be transferred to a bank in their new country.

The NYSE would collapse over night and no longer exist.

A lot of people who own property in places like Florida would have an interesting problem with no visa.

Sounds great.

Sensational, maybe; foolish nonsense, definitely.  There is always strength in numbers even though some may not always agree with the majority.  Why do you think we have never been occupied by a foreign power?

For the record, I am of Chinese, Ukrainian and German descent.  Although there are Native Hawaiians in my family, I am not.

It was mostly American sugar planters behind the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy.  Among their supporters were some Native Hawaiians and a bunch of Portuguese (this not well known) immigrants.  The U.S. has said their military was there only to protect American citizens, but recently discovered documentation discloses otherwise.

The Republic of Hawaii was established after the fall of the monarchy followed by annexation with Hawaii becoming a U.S. Territory.  Hawaii overwhelmingly voted for statehood and 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state.

No problem.  By the way, I was born in Hawaii and so was my mother.

Her parents immigrated to Hawaii in the early 1900s.

I moved there after I was living in Japan. Had an easy job doing booze cruises for Japanese people as I speak Japanese.

Anyway NE states would.bankrupt Canada. 41 million obese out of work white collar types to spoon feed ozempic to. A huge amount of people in their right mind would flee to the USA. Especially those that value their 1st and 2nd amendment rights. That is basically a lot of people that build and fix things.

Since Trump utterly defeated the drunken cackling hag the <removed> of the lefty loonies has become increasingly amusing.

When Trump slashes healthcare and social security, and increase the COL with tariffs, let's see if you still find it amusing.

Lost their minds for many many years now. This topic just another example of the sky is falling mentality fear mongering they love 😉

Remember when Trump won against Hillary? They were melting down the streets torching cars & crying at the same time.

But you live in Thailand .

Dems dividing up the USA because they lost the election is rather similar to attempting to over turn the election

Tariffs, maybe.  Cutting Social Security and Medicare is a lie told by Kamala Harris.

The money for the tax cuts Trump gives to his billionaire backers will have to be coming from somewhere else.

It won't be coming from Defence, he'll be spending more on advanced weapons.

Op is borderline troll with this Trump stuff. Get over it, dude, it is done. The guy is a pr1ck, but isn't the devil or even a the 'N' word that you guys like to bandy about. It is just puerile baby talk that people would want to break up their country, or move, or that people would not want to visit because of who is in office. Utterly ridiculous classroom stuff that is not worth the bandwidth.

Typical leftist propaganda crap. Some lunatic left-wing Democratic New York state senator says we should all secede because Donald Trump is a meanie and the papers pick it up like it's a plan.
