No longer the principal industry. You stuck in the past.

No, it didn't. And the article, to its great credit (for once), doesn't repeat that ignorant myth.

Not a myth, fact and the elite also became very rich over the Vietnam war as America gave Thailand billions over that period "where did it all go"? Not to the Thai people. Soldiers went to Pattaya and officers went to Phuket. That divide still vibrates slightly even to this day. Watered down a bit when the Russians started to appear in numbers ( I noticed this change in about 20012/13).

Ignorant nonsense. R&R was in Bangkok. It was wide open, and it had everything for everybody. The bases, except U-tapao, were north of BKK in Isaan. Why spend your precious R&R fishing at a pretty much deserted beach with no bar scene or nightlife? As for U-tapao, it had its own regulated little bar scene even further south at a place called Newland.

Take away the sex trade and Pattaya will be a fishing village again.
Most of the tourists and people wwho go to Pattaya are only for the sex trade, not for anything else.

No.

Always baffled me how Pattaya became so popular.

Cities usually spring up from being located on a river which Pattaya hasn't got.

There are hundreds of nicer beaches in Thailand too.

Pattaya just got lucky (or unlucky) i guess.

No mention of Pattayas principal industry of prostitution? It started during the Vietnam R and R destination during the Vietnam war as referenced in the article and has indeed flourished since that date.

Quiye why such a random article should make headlines today, I have no idea 🤷‍♂️

Most people that know it well call it little Russia these days.

The Vietnam War played a crucial role, as American soldiers deployed in the region frequented Pattaya for leisure, igniting the town's initial tourism spark."

A common, oft-repeated myth we love. The only American soldiers in the region were at U-tapao. They visited (not "frequented," they worked on the base) in a desultory fashion w/ a few buddies for occasional fishing. Rented boats, headed out towards Koh Larn.

In the 70s after the American military had left. Germans and Australians, mainly. Really picked up in 1978 w/ influx of offshore oil workers.

Once a serene fishing village along Thailand's Eastern Gulf Coast, Pattaya has morphed into a bustling tourism powerhouse over the decades.

I would prefer the former.

My wife's father was a fisherman in Pattaya and remembers going with him. Then she and her brother provided horse rides along the beach for visitors - memories....

Did he own any land.

My girlfriends family come from Pattaya, they have owned land beach road/second road since 80's.

Their Land value has sky rocketed since owning

I think the last part of the title was truncated.  It should read:

"Pattaya Flourishes from Quiet Fishing Village to Vibrant Tourist Hub to human cesspit".

Do I detect a trace of wowserism there?

Family friendly? I'd like to see a family negotiating their way up or down Soi Bukahao on foot without casualties...or worse...swim in the sea at this beach resort without being sick afterwards. ...bring the kids on a tour of the weed shops...?

Family friendly is IMO a lie perpetuated by those that hope to tap into bigger profits.

One has always known that it is foolish for a farang to swim in the sea off Pattaya. I used to go to Jomtien to swim.

Realising the importance of sustainable tourism, Pattaya began shifting gears in the 2000s. Efforts to bolster infrastructure included improved roads, a modernised public transport network, and facilities catering to family-friendly tourism.

Improved roads :cheesy:

Modernised public transport. Have they built that monorail then? :cheesy:

facilities catering to family-friendly tourism. They managed to fool some family friendly resort owners to build up in North Pattaya, but apparently the little busters remain with the resort grounds as not much in evidence whenever I was in Pattaya
