To be fair, apart from tourism money, most Thais don't want any foreigners in Thailand.

So after 40 votes cast thus far the current polling stands at

67.57% in favor of NO and 32.43% in favor of YES, regarding wanting Russians in Thailand.

Thank you to everyone who has voted so far - it certainly is interesting to see how the votes have been cast and what AN members think about this particular situation.

You should have added a 'none of my business' box

I have friends who know younger Russians. And they say they are kind, friendly and progressive. I have no idea what percentage of the population these younger people represent, nor how representative they are of the Russian population. Personally, I have met very few friendly Russians. Anywhere in the world. The vast majority of Russians I have met, seem to have very, very few redeeming qualities. It is no wonder.

I can only speak from my experience. Have run into alot of Russians both in the US, and on Phuket and Samui, 98% of them seem to be grumpy, unfriendly and gruff. Some of them are downright hostile. Likely a reflection of a very, very rough culture and environment. So, perhaps it is not a coincidence that the world is not standing up to support them and show them kindness?

I do not think it is a sense of entitlement. I think it is a reflection of the current culture. It was destroyed over a century of callous and murderous leadership. Stalin, Lenin, Khruschev, now Putin. They have become somewhat savage and crude. No grace, no finesse, no courtesy. Rather uncivilized. My family was from Russia a few generations back. I used to ask my great-grandmother when she was still around, why they didn't teach us anything about the old country. She would give me this look, and tell me "the reason we never teach you about the place we came from, is because the place we came from was the most horrific country on earth, it was the most destitute, horrible, oppressive place and we were thrilled to finally get out of there and leave it behind. That's why we don't teach you about the old country, the old country doesn't exist for us.

There are a multitude of reasons why very few around the world have sympathy for the Russians. Those reasons are not limited to their serial killing, despot, thieving multi billionaire dictator for life. It is more about their nature, their history as ruthless, homicidal Cossack warriors, and their total lack of manners, and class. Not to mention the dignity, class, decency, civility, and social skills decades of Leninism, Stalinism, and now Putinism has stripped them of.

And of course, the utter failure of their leader. This is a clear case of psychological projection: Putin dreamt and failed to create a dollar-free world and establish Russia as an “energy superpower.” He allowed corruption to metastasize through the state’s fabric, undermining its security capabilities. With its mass emigration, skyrocketing divorce rate, and low fertility, Russia, more than the West, demonstrates an immense collapse of family and social values.

Russia has nothing but malicious intentions. They are a terrorist state, run by a serial killing desperado. This is a nation so lacking in redeeming qualities. They contributed alot culturally, in past centuries. Now? What are they bringing to the table? How are they of any benefit to mankind? They offer nothing but misery, death, destruction and bad will.

Excellently written, spidermike.

Articulate, thought-provoking and hit right on the nerve!

It is my business, though.

They live near and disturb me and my family on a regular basis.

Lemme guess, your next reply will be 'if you don't like it then move' ?

to which I will reply, NO. I will stand my ground and fight these obnoxious pigs to the death if need be.

I have had enough.

What a load of tosh.

You as a westener might dislike Russia, but the west is not the 'world', far from it at 15%

You n all the other old codgers  on AN might be russiaphobic, but you certainly don't speak for anyone but yourselves

What's right with them?

Did you read my OP?

Love the Russian hotties in their thongs out on the beach. Great scenery enhancement, so I'm glad they're back.

Otherwise, the Russians in general are better looking than Brits, have better manners, don't talk constantly, and speak better English. None of that know-it-all pontificating and whinging.

Bring 'em on, "bob."

More like...........🙄.........Nothing to do with being weak......:coffee1:

Bottom line is the government of Thailand wants them here as long as their trashed currency still has any value. What we as foreigners think is irrelevant.

Why so many Russians?
The usual reasons to escape harsh winters to the tropic and not so long a flight especially from Siberia and the Russian far east.

Since Putin's war of choice, yes a lot more draft dodgers, and whether they're just cowardly or are actually against the war is between them and their dog.

It's really none of our business.

Keep in mind there are very few countries that are desirable to travel to now that Russians can actually easily enter.

Thailand has decided to be one of those countries and I respect their decision and if I didn't, it wouldn't matter anyway.

I didn't move to Thailand for it to be exactly like my home country.

It really is when they step on my toes.

If they kept their mouths shut after hours, acted cordially and politely and didn't trash the place then I wouldn't have any gripes with them.

Same with the Chinese. They are both cut from the same cloth IMO.

Exactly. The more American the whole scene becomes, the better it will be

I certainly wouldn't agree with that..........but I guess it must be the cultural arrogance that makes you think that would be the case.

I agree with @BarBoy on that topic.

So I'll ask this irreverent question:

If Russians and Chinese annoy us with their behavior, what can we do (within the law) to annoy them in return??

So maybe next vacation they'll go somewhere else.

Possibilities:

- open the door and play loud Western classical music such as Vivaldi or Brahms

- smoke a turkey so that strange (to them) aroma fills the condo hall

- buy a cheap bicycle with a loud bell for the young Thai boy who lives across the hall and tell him the condo hallway is a fun place to ride and ring the bell, especially early Sunday morning (or any morning, really) when the neighboring Russkies had a lot to drink the night before.

But what would annoy Chinese??

Not loud noise, they are used to that.

Not bad smells, same reason.

Certainly not rude behavior from us, they wouldn't even notice.

Only thing that will annoy Chinese is to cheat them out of some money, but that is extremely difficult because they are so much more clever at that than we are.

With Russians, maybe some chance of repelling them.

But with Chinese, I don't see any way.

And the next question might be, how to repel young Americans?

As an older American myself, I might have some ideas about that.

Russiians speak better English than the Brits ??

That does nothing for your credibility............................not that you were ever well-endowed in that department..

The only people that the reasons edge out on manners are the Chinese and Indians.

The rental contract would allow kicking them out for breaking the rules of the lease and keeping the deposit.

So, are you sure your story is 100% accurate?

So sorry!  I failed to demand sight of the rental contract......  I suspect that the Thai family didn't consider unruly guests - every time that I've rented in Koh Phangan, I've never been given a contract - all done on trust and assumption that the renter is not a <deleted> and will behave in a reasonable manner.....

More than a third in this poll WANT....not tolerate, but WANT the Russians here........WT.....?

Any rational explanations for that......even from a Russian???

Two thirds don't want um, a decent majority.

it's clear to see why out there, it's become like the wild-west since they reopened after covid!

They are literally everywhere now. In every tourist hotspot, in every condo building, in every restaurant and on every train, Thailand is littered with these Russian(s)

@BarBoy that was a great idea for a topic here.
