Reduced tax on wine has it happened anywhere on Phuket island?

As in title, any change in price yet?

Was some news about this many month ago, but I cant remember reading any news about it after that.

Would be nice if it happened and I can find nice value red wine now when I'm here for a few month again.

Supposedly, wine priced at lease than 1000 baht is not taxed.  Not that you can find fine wine at those kind of prices, but you can try.

Simple answer......if it has then the only people who've benefited is the retail chain and not the consumer. Which is not what was intended but par for the course here.

I think prices have reduced.  Champagne used to be 4k+ and now there are many choices 2.5-3k.  Perfectly drinkable reds can be found in 7-11 for 350-500 and not "fruit wines".  That was not the case before.

Wine previously 399 down to 359 in Makro yesterday.

It appears to have been a meaningless gesture, as there are national, provincial and local taxes, in addition to vat and other forms of taxes, they total 360%, so a small reduction is not going to affect the retail price. We've seen the wine prices have not come down at all and it's still virtually impossible to get an excellent bottle of wine here at a decent price. Single Vineyard Sonoma Pinots that I pay $50 to $60 for in the US can't be found here, and if they were available they would be 10,000 baht.

 

Thailand has deliberately sabotaged their wine market with stunning ignorance, and have suppressed what could potentially be a multi-billion dollar industry and an outstanding way to attract the affluent tourists, as always very backward thinking on the part of the government.

Yes, that's pretty much my take on matters too. A bottle of bog standard Moet used to be around the 3,500-4,000 Baht mark, but now you can get it for around 2,500 Baht. Also Taittinger and Bollinger are available at under 3,000 Baht a bottle. Given that these wines cost around 50 quid a bottle in Heathrow duty free, the local mark-up and tax is much less than it used to be. My go to fizz these days is the excellent Breton Fils, especially the rosé which is an great buy at around 1,600 Baht a bottle.

Yes I noticed quite some price reduction on wine and spirits in Makro the other day, but I think it has to do with promotions.

For example Kulov vodka 70cl, down to 254 bht from 330, but the 1 liter version still regular price.

Same for some brandy and whisky, 70cl volume down in price, but other volumes of the same thing hadn't changed in price.

A brandy I purchased was down more than 25% from the regular price.

I have noticed a few reductions on the wines I buy from a distributor, Vinum Lector, and recently snapped up a very good Italian Appassimento red wine which was previously selling at around 600 baht plus VAT, for 480 baht plus VAT, so I bought 12 bottles and yesterday enquired as to its availability again, but unfortunately they have sold out!

 

I don't know whereabouts on Phuket island you will be staying, but Wine Pro has three outlets here and their prices are very competitive, and I sometimes buy a few bottles from Patong Whiskey because their prices are a little bit cheaper than elsewhere and they have a "better" selection than the likes of Big C and Tops. Also a little "supermarket" called Promphan on the 4024 road heading south from the Central junction has a small but different range of wines.

 

As I mentioned in another post, I believe the range of red wines labelled, "19 Crimes" are good value for money and I specifically like the "red blend".

 

I also have another distributor from whom I buy, and they will deliver, but there is a minimum order.

Bought a 750ml bottle of Jacobs Creek Cab Sav for 440 baht from 7/11 today. Pretty sure these were over 600 baht before.
