No power, no computers?

A question posed by a true amateur:

How long will servers and all other digital devices keep working if a large scale electrical power outage should occur, batteries exhausted?

Depending on device I suppose. 2 days, 2 months, 2 years?

Worst case?

How "large scale"?

Is this a doomsday question?

Generalized for the whole world?

No UPS zero seconds

With UPS 30 minutes

With Solar and Batteries unlimited.

Amateur asking. UPS? (United Parcel Service?)

Future AI servers using the power of mid-sized towns with solar and wind?

I needed a second to get the joke.

Sure all the wonderful gadgets will be worthless.

Can't buy you a loaf of bread.

Doomsday predictions contain a widespread attack on the internet submarine cables.

Major civilized countries will sink in chaos after 3 days without electrical power.

Everything depends on electrical power, everything depends on internet.

Uninterrupted power source, basically a battery buffered device that will keep your computer for minites to hours.

But really: what do you care about computers in a "large scale" power outage?

There will be much worse problems.

Starts with flushing the toilet in your condo not possible

No water from the tap.

No fuel at the station.

All 7/11 and supermarkets shut down, have goods but can't sell.

Looting will start sometime sooner or later.

Goods will rot as fridges out.

Don't think further please!

Actually it is a "doomsday" question. The more I expect of you (an expert) to tell me without much "but, if, possibly". Speak freely. = Worst case, for example.

When the power supply stops, in-house wifi shuts down as well (as the router doesn't work).

Unless your got a connection provided by outside companies.

I seem to always be worrying about an EMP strike...

So here is how I am preparing.

As to how long my preparations will last....

Maybe a little over a decade.

Called "solar wind".  Last such ocurrence, aiming at the earth was about 120 years ago. No computers then.

No.

I am talking about a Nuclear Magnetic Pulse caused by a Soviet high altitude detonation...

Or, Russian one, these days.

You can expect plenty of GAMMA radiation....by the way...

Scientiflicty correct, humans can cause EMP bursts as well as the good old sun. I myself can produce such happenings in my underwear after consuming liberal amounts of CIALIS. But that is not the topic.

do you have cash ?

Yes have. 3 days ago in my supermarket the "system" was down. Paid in cash. King of the hill while "card customers" looked like financially beached wales.

More so, the young cashier ladies, seeing "cash", looked at me in a dreamy way. Not having seen such positive facial expressions by young ladies in ages. Possibly thingking that finally a sack of coins will eventually buy more bread than cripto currencies.

Of course we know that the lack of electricity for any lenght of time will cause problems. Answers so far not really satisfactory.

So, I will rephrase: How long can a power outage last before all my vital facts (social security number, Tax ID number etc etc etc etc etc etc ) be "lost forever". All of us realising that without the digital etc etc etc etc etc our word would come to a standstill.
REMEDIES?
Come on boys and girls, this is a serious matter.

My devices themselves, on 1 battery, don't think any would last longer than a few hours, if that, if used.

One reason we have solar and BEVs.

A solar generator and panels, could solve the basics, but they're not cheap.  Actually about same price as small solar system if DIY.

@swissie   If a permanent outage, as in post above, then they would be useless immediately, since everything runs on electric.

I must admit I stockpile bottles of water, that would be the basic need to run out quick with no power for a long period, forget about the PC

There was a great TV series a few years ago called "Revolution" nothing electric worked in the word, including batteries

My local bakery does not accept solar at 6am when I buy a loaf of bread... they do cash though.

Not my sick Buffalos.

Wonder if there are any sick Buffalos left in Thailand?

Must be hundreds of fixed ones.

Happened to me about 20 years ago.

A Category 5 cyclone hit Cairns, Australia where I was living.

Electricity was restored to parts of the CBD area, where the cities 2 hospitals were located, within 24 hours.  Some facilities, such as the hospitals and some local radio stations, had emergency generators.

It took 3 days for the suburb I was living in to get electricity, and other parts of the city about a week.  Nearby areas (outer suburbs) 2-3 weeks; some rural areas 2-3 months.

No electricity = no gas/petrol pumps, no wifi, no water pumps, no mobile/cell services.  I had to turn on my car radio to get news updates.

It's hard to make a living for the several people required to bake bread with wood fueled ovens.  I'm sure the baker would be happy to exchange bread for power from someone with lots of solar.

Quite a lot of us have solar, so the biggest problem would be no food in the shops and no water to your house.

Best to buy a ceramic straw and a few sacks or rice just in case.

I wonder how many buckets of solar power they would charge for a loaf of bread ?

If the wood fueled oven is a pita they could bake in a solar oven instead !

so.... solar is king during daylight hours after all 👍   as long as  you use parabolic mirrors to focus enough sunlight to produce the temps required for baking bread
