Did you have a happy Childhood?

My father taught me to stay out of debt. A valuable lesson which has served me well for all my life.

My childhood was happy, until I won a scholarship to a prestigious college, at secondary level. There, I learned kids from privileged backgrounds could be total @rseholes. It was a poisoned chalice, although I did have some very good teachers. The combination of being a "brain" and socially inept made me a target.

I only started to gain self-confidence when I left home to work in a remote part of Australia, and had to fend for myself.

Alice Springs? The Kimberly?

Obviously working in such remote parts of Australia you met wonderful people

Why do you post <deleted>?

Good people can work in isolated places. I met many amazing people in Antarctica, which is as isolated as it's possible to find on planet Earth

Tried it. In Thailand.

Didn't work for me. Same as AA.

So I have decided to keep the booze as a medicine and along with a little diazepam every now and again works wonders when my anxiety strikes.

Im not having a go at you or anything but have you ever considered that the booze and meds are causing your anxiety? It caused it for me. Im detoxed now from both and rarely have either now. But when I go on a binge it comes back. give up your vices pal

sounds like you also had a screwed up childhood. why dont you tell us about your problems and issues??

I don't know what give you that idea of MY childhood, which was very pleasant for myself and four siblings.

Only problem was as usual, lack of money in the household, both Dad & Mum working their hardest to give us their best.

Its quite sad in that the guy has no life at all and only exists on the internet. In reality just a drunk who does not fit in. No money, no honey and sitting in a 25 sq meter hovel typing at a breakneck pace. Each and every day.

Or those reading your train wreck. As for your thread I had a great time growing up as an Aramco brat in Saudi Arabia. I had been around the world 4 times before moving back to California at 12.

IMO there's a difference between old money and new money. Old money has good manners. New money tends to treat anyone they consider below them like dirt. I saw that at the college, and also at a high-end golf club where I was a member.

My experience also - old money tends(!) to be gracious. New tends(!) to be arrogant and self centered. Exhibit one: the US' Little Rocket Man himself.

Yeah I had a pretty happy childhood. Wasn't rich that's for sure, both my Mom and Dad were farm workers in the CA Central Valley.

But I felt very loved, and as a rare thing back in the 60's, especially as an Hispanic I was an only child, so they poured their love into me.

It was a happy time, all us kids played out in the street, and of course back then during the summer vacation you told after breakfast, "Go out and play" and you weren't expected to come home until dinner!

My parents, especially my Mom pushed me hard at school and I ended up at UC Berkeley

That said saw a bunch of school friends who were from less loving families fall to the drugs, gangs and ultimately prison.

It's not a cliche to say that our childhood 'can' make or destroy your life
