Out in the sticks they pay little attention to it......New Year is the big event.

Sure, but, you realise that "capitalism" is only really an economic system, right?  The way we use it is to not just let it run wild.  It's regulated, taxed, it has laws that control it, and, importantly, we have a welfare system that works independently of it.  You should know this.

You're actually correct.  It can be celebrated as a religious event, it has its origins in religion, but it is celebrated, probably by most who celebrate it, as a non-religious event.

Why do Thai's celebrate New Year  31 December,  as   their New Year is Songkran, its about earning...
