Popcorn brain" is a term used to describe a mental state where someone has difficulty focusing on a single task for an extended period. It's characterized by:

  • Increased stress, anxiety, and fatigue
  • Problems with sleep
  • Poor decision making and retention
  • Scattered thoughts
  • Fragmented attention
  • Rapidly switching from one topic to another
  • Mental restlessness
  • Difficulty sustaining a coherent train of thought
The term was coined in 2011 by David Levy, a researcher at the University of Washington. He suggests that the brain has become accustomed to the constant digital stimulation and mimics that frenetic pace.
