dry cough

Just doesn't seem to go away.. just started an antihistamine - - must be a nasal drip -- maybe a good thick cough medicine will help? I also have developed a low grade fever the last couple of days... 

 

my wife is going to make some chicken soup...

 

any ideas?

Dry cough can come from allergies, a cold, Covid, Gerd, smoking,  and many other reasons, so it's best to check if you have anything that might have caused it before taking medications that may not help.If this has happened repeatedly it might be allergies, seasonal, that are giving you the cough. Hot tea with lemon, fluids and a humidifier or steam can help with the symptoms.

Wife has had a dry cough for about four weeks now.....real hacking cough......gave it to me (the cough) Christmas Day.

 

Both up all night, everynight hacking away...driving us mad......covid???? Oh wait...that was a hoax wasn't it? All those old dears lying very still were just crisis actors?

The ignominiously named "Brown Mixture" (Leopard Brand) traditional Thai cough medicine works great for me.  I bought some on my arrival Tuesday and the cough was 90% gone within the day.  YMMV.

Finally went to the Doctor 3 days ago diagnosed with a sinus infection.  He put me on antibiotics and just today I starting to feel better.

Daughter went out to pharmacy and got me something today.

Cough with fever, you need to see a doctor. More than allergic post-nasal drip is involved.

 

Brown Mixture is an effective cough suppressant, but it is not always a good idea to suppress a cough, and in any case, with fever, there is likely an infection of some sort that needs to be diagnosed and treated.

I don't disagree, but what's the reality in Thailand?  I don't ever recall having anything cultured to do a sinus diagnosis.  It always seems to be an eenie-meenie-minie-moe selection of an antibiotic.  Or is there more science involved?

I had that a couple of years ago.  Doctor gave me a nasal rinse bottle and the saline power that you mix with water to do the rinsing.  After a few rinses it cleared up quickly.  
 

If nasal rinsing doesn’t work, then it will be a serious sinus infection and you’ll need antibiotics for that.

There are many antibiotics, specialist gave me one which you only took one tablet per day. Go to hospital you come home with a bag of  about 6 different drugs. They hope 1 will work 😄

Sorry, I was not aware that you're a doctor or at least pharmacist. My apologies

I've had this issue many times in the past, the last time it was diagnosed by an ENT as allergic bronchitis which was totally out of left field, but she treated it and it went away.

 

These days I use a variety of throat sprays, I find the chamomile spray widely available at the pharmacy here to be very good, and then I also use these Chinese tablets that you find in the pharmacy in the yellow package that seem to work very well. I think they're called Gumgig Pean. Other than that nasal rinses can be quite effective. It's just a matter of getting rid of the tickle that causes the dry cough.

That's been my experience in the real world.  Even back in the nanny state where antibiotics are by prescription only, I've never been swabbed and cultured for a proper diagnosis.  Not in 67 years of walking the planet, most of those years with a deviated septum that made me susceptible to sinus problems. 

 

In fact, I don't recall the last time I even saw a doctor for a sinus problem.  They do that "diagnosis" over the phone now, and call in the antibiotic de jour, suggesting I call them back for another if that one doesn't solve the problem.  Leading me to characterize it as a guess...  An expensive guess.

Many people get relief drinking pure pineapple juice. I have a rare lung disease, dry cough is my main symptom and pineapple juice works for me

Do you drink processed pineapple juice, or do you juice fresh pineapples?  Or does it make a difference to its effectiveness?

Sometimes, it depends on where you live.

Lots of pollution coming with the north winds.

I live on the coast and I get a dry cough when there is high humidity.

98% in the bedroom a few days ago and the dry cough is back.
