A father, mother, and son were rescued from their car using hydraulic cutting tools after a crash caused by the driver falling asleep at the wheel. Authorities have urged motorists to use rest stops if they feel fatigued during their journeys, with the reminder: “Don’t drive drowsy. Don’t drive drunk.”

The crash occurred on the southbound side of the Asian Highway in Ban Koh Thong Som, Moo 12, Khao Chaison sub-district, Khao Chaison district, Phatthalung.

Emergency responders from Phatthalung Rescue and Maekri Rescue units worked together to free the family trapped in a Honda City car (registration plate from Songkhla). The driver, Mr. Wutthipong Samarn, 60, was the first to be extracted, followed by his wife, Mrs. Abeebah Samarn, 53, and their 16-year-old son, Mr. Dolifda Samarn. All three sustained injuries but are now in a stable condition after being rushed to hospital.

The crash happened early in the morning of January 1, while the family was returning from Bangkok to their home in Khuan Lang, Hat Yai district, Songkhla province.

Mr. Wutthipong recounted the incident, claiming, “I heard a loud noise when switching lanes, but I wasn’t sure it was my car. The next thing I knew, the vehicle lost control, veered into the central reservation, and struck a tree.”

Authorities suspect that driver fatigue caused the accident.

Officials have reminded the public to prioritise rest during long journeys, particularly as many are returning to work or travelling home after New Year’s celebrations.

“Many people may be sleep-deprived due to late-night festivities, increasing the risk of accidents. Rest areas and service points are available along major roads. Drivers can also stop at petrol stations to ensure their safety. Don’t drive if you’re tired or intoxicated,” authorities emphasised.
