Which new laptop?

I’d like to get a new laptop (intel, win 11, lots of ports (very important, I want to connect via hdmi, 2/3 usbc for fast connect 2, 2/3 usb sower connect for exterior hd/printer). I live near TukCom’s JIB).

 

It is for a limited purpose - downloading mkvs. Max price-40K.

 

what do you suggest.

I think that EVERY laptop these days has at least one HDMI output, and two or three USB3 or USBc  sockets.

you could get one of those USB hub thingies 

I got one for my laptop, it goes in a USB slot and has 4 USB ports, problem solved. You can get ones with more ports if you want

Remembering I just want it to rebuild my movies collection (I had a 4 gig disk with a lotsa the best movies, especially 30’s-40’s). I dropped it a couple of times; when I asked jib if it could be repaired, several staff laughed and laughed.

Have you considered buying a 2nd hand PC?

I know they had sales from company desktop PCs i.e. in Fortune. Maybe they also have notebooks for sale, maybe 4 years old or so.

Get on the JIB website. Go to laptops. Filter your search, e.g. price 20-30k, brands e.g., Asus, Acer, Dell. Trawl the results to find your selection of ports etc. Get an external hub like BB suggested if you require more ports than on a laptop. Buy a new external hard drive to put your movies on.

 

Repairing your old hard drive... people mostly only try if they really, really need to recover their data. It's generally not a cheap process, if it's even viable. You could always ask at some of the small repair shops if they think it is worth a shot. JIB, understandably, is going to want to sell you a new one.

I don't know TukCom, but most IT malls have at least one secondhand PC shop. You can get some good deals on three or four year old desktops with a three-month warranty. A new Win 11 desktop at JIB that easily does what you want would be around 25k.

I recovered data many times. There are basically 3 options.

a) The case/electronic outside the disk is the problem. Replace that, problem solved.

b) Recover software does the job. It's best used if someone has experience with that. It just takes time waiting.

c) It's worse than a) and b). Then you need a specialist company with a clean room, and it might get really expensive.

Why an expensive laptop, if you are going to connect to a TV via HDMI anyway? Why not a Mini PC connected to the TV? 5k - 20k instead of 40k.

The issue that I see, is that your requirements can be fulfilled by a 1000 to 2000 baht Android box. Paying up to 40,000 baht for a laptop requires some other criteria. Hence no one coming up with any recommendations. That's why people are suggesting suitable devices that fit your requirements. 

Anything else is overkill and a waste of resources.

Now if you were a photographer/videographer, you would be looking to spend more on a high quality screen/graphics. But for downloading videos, it's a waste of money. Think about if you were to Torrent Terabytes of media in order to rebuild your collection. You may have to leave your laptop on, continually charging your battery for days/weeks.

 

I suggest separating the tasks. Cheap Mini PC or Android Box that can run 24/7 if necessary and a less expensive laptop for your mobile needs.

Simple enough to control from any device connected to the Internet. For example, I can initiate a media download from my phone and stream it on my TV or/and download it to an external drive elsewhere within seconds. Can be automated to download a list of media to an external drive/NAS. You can do all of that with a 1000 baht Android box. 

 

Either way, good luck with your search for a laptop.

Centigrade32 - thanks for that. Can you recommend a particular android box (‘llI read up on them). I like that going through a laptop’s browser; I can be downloading from many sources at the same time. Unfortunately, I use a TOT modem but the condo restricts the speed, in that they want TOT to pay a bunch to install the required wiring. I get less than 1 meg.

It's the same. You can use an Android box and Bluetooth keyboard for that. Android boxes have browsers too. Often Chrome at least.

Windows(Mini) PC is just a more familiar format, but does exactly the same thing. I described two different scenarios. You can download to your external drive and/or stream. In other words, you can keep everything on your storage drive, but be able to view those videos on any device. On your Smartphone whilst travelling for instance. Saving to a hard drive is just one of the options available.

Torrents and FileHosters equally. So better opportunities to find the old media again.

You can use something like KODI or PLEX on the Android Box or PC to organise your collection.

 

The TrustOnX boxes are a good place to begin. TOX 3 is around 2k. TOX4 around 1.1k.

But if you don't have a Smartphone, you might not be familiar with Android and instead it might be best for you to stick with Windows and a Mini PC.

 

1Mbps doesn't seem right. Are you sure? That's really slow and you won't be able to download anything at that rate. Better to invest in a SIM package. I think some offer up to 20Mbps these days. Unlimited.

Store files on hard drives, small light and portable, can buy USB hub for extra ports, if you want powerful laptops Apple make some great ones.

If you enjoy watching your movies on a 15 inch screen, yes a laptop will do.

But if you already have a large TV, think about a mini PC like a Beelink, HDMI'ed into the telly.

I got a top b0ii0cz one for Bht 16000, never looked back. Into my 4K TCL telly. Whooo!

Came with W11 Pro, 1 Tb M2 drive. OK, only 3 USB ports, but hubs are dirt cheap. 2 x HDMI ports

Working with a Mini PC or Android Box, you can use a Wireless keyboard. The box stays attached to the TV/Monitor, but you can recline on your sofa with the keyboard. With a laptop, you are usually hunched over it's keyboard and in close proximity to it's screen and it can overheat if not on a flat surface.
