A police officer who sustained critical injuries during a bombing at a traffic checkpoint in Pattani has tragically passed away, days after the attack.

The incident occurred on 3 January when unidentified assailants concealed an improvised explosive device (IED) inside a battery box placed near a traffic checkpoint sign. The blast injured six officers and a three-year-old child on Highway 42, near Ban Kalapho School in Tero Bon subdistrict, Sai Buri district, Pattani. The officers were conducting routine safety operations during the “Ten Dangerous Days” of the New Year holiday period.

Songklanagarind Hospital in Songkhla confirm that Police Sergeant Major Pattapong Siammai, a traffic officer at Sai Buri Police Station, succumbed to his injuries. Sgt. Maj. Pattapong had sustained severe shrapnel wounds to his head, torso, and legs.

Despite the tireless efforts of medical staff, his condition deteriorated rapidly from 4 January due to critical injuries to his brain caused by shrapnel. The officer’s death has deeply saddened his family, who have lost their primary breadwinner.

The attack has heightened concerns about security in the region as investigations into the perpetrators continue. Authorities are determined to bring those responsible for the heinous act to justice.
