Dear Folks,

Some might say that notes uttered by birds are annoying, but not I. Sweet birdsong is relaxing and uplifting.

What really bugs me is listening to the California birds uttering utterances in the style of frog vocalizations.

Of course, I do love listening to FROGS vocalize like frogs, but not that species of humans which imitates the bullfrog.

What is the purpose of California Fry, other than to be just plain annoying?

And, what would Mark Twain have said about men who speak with such a pronounced fry?

Mark Twain once wrote a story about a famous frog of Calaveras County, and most enjoyable it was.

image.png.6f3a6d2ff24de6238e54f3192d81c3d1.png

But I think Twain would poke fun at the New Californians, maybe some from the Valley, that pretend to actually BE frogs.

These days, I worry that this California Fry is just too contagious, and will pollute our planet, if things continue like this, unchecked.

I guess you recall Kaplan.  He is about my age, and, to my ear, he speaks normally.  How difficult can it be?  Why do the New Californians find it so difficult to speak like the Real Men who busted the sod, tamed the wilderness,  and created the paradise that California has become?

Just listen to Kapan speak, and tell me why, if Kaplan can speak normally, ….

Why can’t these New Californians.

We used to think it was only the California girls that spoke with extreme vocal fry, those and also the girls on National Public Radio, for example.  But now, many men have caught the bug from the girls, and….how annoying is this!!!

Did Tony Soprano speak with vocal fry?

Not in the year 2000.

In my day, NOBODY did.

I think this is just one more thing indicative of the decay and decadence now polluting America, and soon the entire world.

And, there seems no advantage to it, either.

Are we now just becoming too old for this world?

Should we just stop fretting about this and let the young people enjoy the ever more warped world that mass media and Social Media  is enabling them to create?

Such an annoyance.

And, such a shame, too, that our once-tolerable world of just two decades ago is now lost and almost completely gone.

Really annoyed, and…

The shallowness of the New Californians seems mind-boggling to thinking people of my day.

Best regards,

Gamma

Note:  Talk about Total CHAOS taking over ... .Here are true words from Robert D Kaplan, one who I often read in The Atlantic, decades ago.  And not one croak will you hear listening to this vid. No truer words were ever spoken.

Yes.

One of his GREATEST stories, IMHO.

A very famous frog, indeed.

When I listen to Americans, it seems to me they are speaking through their noses. And they appear to be in competition with the British, in terms of regional accents. A Texan sounds nothing like a New Yorker.

There's no competition whatsoever with British accents, they can't compete.

I am not ashamed to admit that I had no idea WTH vocal fry is. So I had to google ...

Vocal Fry from California has been driving me up the walls...for years.

And, this blight upon the land is spreading.

I also do not go for Valley Girls, or Valley Speech.

Absolutely agree with you but it is not just Californians, it's spreading all over the place and made even worse by the addition of moronic upspeaking that turns every statement into a question.

What you are referring to is NOT a question.

No, we linguists refer to this as something called....UP-TALK.

UpTalk has also driven me fairly crazy, during the past decade....(why do you think that I am as crazy as I am, these days?)

Uptalk has become very prevalent, especially in places like Oregon, California, Seattle, and APPLE COMPUTER COMPANY....for over a decade.

Drives me CRAZY.....

=======

Still, I do not mind UPTALK when it happens with a very sexy young thing........

California fire, or fires.

Please don your reading glasses.

Thank you!

The tune I linked is, after all, about being driven CRAZY.....

And, about a man being driven to SAND......

This is what UPTALK has been doing to me during the past 15 years.....

So, this is just to honestly answer your question...and.....

Nothing More....

Might one also add an important observation?

Back in he day, when this tune was created and recorded.....

Girls were better.

Girls did not speak with this FRY affectation.

Neither did they resort to UPTALK, just another California affectation.

Those were the days...the good old days....when....

Girls were girls...and...when....

Men were Real Men.....

Yet....now....We can never return.

And, we can never go home, again....

If things keep going to heck with our world....then...presumably....

Even our beloved frogs will, someday, no longer be with us in our world.

We will become the Last of the Mahicans.....in effect....

The last animals on Earth.

American Girls were just so good?

Whatever happened to those American girls?

Care to take a guess?

Plastic Surgery is an illusion.

Down deep, the human skeleton remains the same, and does not get bigger, but only shrinks.

Being young, these days...

Is a curse like there never was before in history.

A curse.

GG - what about the alarming trend of using "like" as filler in speech?

Are people terrified of dead air?

Of pauses?

Of reflection?

Is "space" in speech (or  music, or visual art for that matter) best avoided?

New topic.

You're welcome.

Like, I don't know, like....

Seems like....

Like some sort of neurological disorder.

Like maybe Tourette Syndrome....maybe.

Give me a like, like I deserve about three for this comment.
