TIN at Chalong Revenue Office

The smartest person, who has always helped me with my taxes, is a middle-aged man who is in the row of desks that you find in front of you when you enter, in the desk furthest to the left.
It seems that he is the one who usually follows the foreigners, try contacting him.

I had the TIN for ten years before having to file my first tax return, I do not believe that it is necessary to pay taxes before having a TIN.....

Have to have a TIN before you can pay any income tax. Years ago when I needed a TIN I had to go to the head tax office in Phuket Town out about 1 km past the Land Office.

I was trying to avoid using an accountant  as I have calculated my tax liability will be very low for 2024

It almost sounds like they were trying to get you to sign a tax declaration in advance so that they would have a record of your tax liability straight away after obtaining a TIN. As already mentioned I believe you obtain a TIN first.

There may have been some miscommunication or even RD incompetence, there is a big difference in their assessment and yours. You may get some definitive answers from other posters as to what is/isn't assessable if you're doubting the RD's assessment.

If it's not too private it would be very useful to know some general details of what they were claiming tax on, e.g. was the income pre 2024, where the income was made, when/if it was remitted to Thailand, acknowledgement of exemption for any DTA, how they handled comingled accounts (LIFO or FIFO)  ?

    Best of luck.

After 1/2 hour of answering questions and explaining things, the young lady tried to tell me I owed over 300k baht in tax!

300 K Baht (300.000 Baht) in taxes ?

Sounds a lot to me.

I will go there in a few weeks to see if a can a TIN only  or if it is required in the first place as i pay taxes in the country where i work.

Interesting how folks who claim to be in the know keep saying here how smart TRD is and how you need to file taxes and don't want to mess with them.  Yet, sure seems like based upon several reports on AN these offices have no clue as to what is going on.

what's that proverb about fool and his money are easily parted?

Was expecting this sort of comment from someone 😴. I need a TIN for offshore financial reasons, not because I am planning to give these Muppets a single baht of my money. But thanks for the useful contribution anyway - NOT

You shouldn't have gone there. offshore or not, none of their business.

You just got assessed a 300k baht tax invoice on the spot. You can zzz me all you want but it wasn't a smart move.

Definitely RD incompetence. To try and get a TIN I showed her proof of two lump sums brought from offshore investment in to Thailand in the second half of 2024 and it looks like she just applied tax to those amounts despite the fact that I showed her only 20% of the total was 2024 income (investment profit). UK citizen but not sure that makes any difference. Trying to get a TIN because the hassle I had with this first company I disinvestment because I could not provide a TIN so thought it would be useful to have one for future disinvestments

I hope she was just daft, and not up-to-speed on TRD guidance on Por 162 pre 2024 income.....I say this because Expatthaitax (a tax advisory firm) has put the word out that Por 162 exemption only applies to pre 2024 bank accounts. Period. Thus, money in investments, brokerages, Individual Retirement Accounts, etc are NOT covered. Where Expatthaitax got their readout of Por 162 from, I dunno. But maybe this TRD lady got the same briefing......
