Eight warning signs you're probably prediabetic - and how to fix it

Prediabetes is a condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a common health issue in the UK, affecting millions of people. However, if you've been told you're prediabetic by your GP, there are steps you can take to prevent and even 'reverse' the condition before it worsens.

Prediabetes, also known as non-diabetic hyperglycaemia, is when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. This serious health condition increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Often, prediabetes doesn't present any symptoms, making it difficult to catch before it progresses into the diabetic range. But, there are some warning signs to watch out for.

Nope, Doc order.

Full blood tests every 6 weeks? Witch doctor? Definitely a quack. You need a second opinion.

Or are you HIV positive and need to check the levels?

Not sure what the doc is checking on to be honest I think mostly to do with my partial kidney removal in 2023.

Also have regular ultrasound done and every 6 month a CT scan.

Thirty years ago.. When I was around 45 years old... a doctor in USA diagnosed me as pre-diabetic. I had no idea what that meant. My knee jerk response was "I'm pre-death and I'm not taking pills for that".

Turns out my blood sugar was 102. No biggy. The doc overreacted... he's only in it for the money.

A better test I learned is A1C... a 3 month average of blood sugar.. Mine was and still is 5.4. Zero issues

An even better indicator of potential problems would be an insulin sensitivity test.  These tests can show abnormalities long before they become apparent via the A1C test.

I think it's very clear. Do test your Glucose. You can do it by yourself !!!

If you are getting up to pee frequently at night, get your prostate checked out for possible BPH or high PSA or both. If you have had your prostate checked and its fine then you may be right, prediabetic.

Oh I see.....I thought I was missing something........ peat night......had visions of sitting around a small fire to cure BPH.

I am prediabetic. HbA1C is OK, fasting blood sugar is high.

I consume fenugreek seed every day, soaked in water overnight. Some studies suggest it helps with blood sugar, and increases insulin sensitivity. It's not very palatable.

If HbA1c normal, then I'd consider myself not prediabetic.

My blood sugar always seems to be high (120+/-),  only last 2X under 120, but the HbA1c, continues to get lower and lower, each time checked;

6.3 highest, I think :cheesy:

5.9

5.7

5.5 last time

HbAic should be lower than 5.5 now, since cutting even more sugar & carbs out, since Feb 2024 (5.5)

Had a friend in the UK lose both legs due to Type2

I have cut all sugar out of my diet. I follow DrBerg on Youtube, has some great advice on this subject

My last test I was fine

Do yourself a favor and get some insulin sensitivity tests.

As I understand it, we all start out with a system that naturally regulates blood glucose levels.  Insulin does that, and it does a good job, at first.  But if you abuse your body, year after year with various types of sugars, you slowly develop what is called insulin resistance.  And at some point, the insulin can no longer keep up.  That's when the blood tests begin to show high glucose levels.  That's when the A1C begins to be higher.  But the real damage began years ago.  So it pays to check it out. A!C tests are not the gold standard.

i eat loads of sugar and carbs and I'm 5.2, maybe you're a little insulin resistant

Maybe back in 2020, that might have been a recommendation.  But I like my doc.  Instead of more test and meds to treat symptoms, she had a more realistic approach.

Advice on eliminating the cause ... "stop eating all the sh!t".  The bakery & coffee shops with survive without you :cheesy:

Ease up on the damn starchy carbs also.  Actually asked what I ate the last week, yea, pastry, potatoes, pizza & pasta ... the 4 Ps :coffee1:

When a doc wants to order more tests and give you a script, then time for a 2nd opinion.

When a doc tells you like it is, advises how to eliminated the cause, listen to her.

There's nothing wrong with altering your diet and eating right.  Maybe that's all you can do, in any event.

Unfortunately for some people, they don't start worrying about being "pre-diabetic" until the A1C tests start indicating that there's a problem. And yet the problem could have been detected years earlier.  Why not nip the problem, in the bud?

I'm fine now, still eat some sugar, minimal, and some carbs, more fibrous than starchy.

Have to admit, it is addicting.  Finally broke the habit.  Sugar = dopamine = I need more.

Potatoes are tater tots now, once ever 2 weeks.

Paste, now only egg noodles, and rare.

Sugar, almost none existent, and pastry is Cheesecake, instead of brownies or apple pie.

Pizza, pretty rare, if Pizza Co has 2 for 1 NY Style, and once a month ... maybe.  Make a pizza at home once a month maybe, as Pizza Co rarely puts NY Style on sale.

I stick to a Keto ish diet, with the overnight fast pretty good now, and number all are good.

Does surprise me, and I was one of those, that when diet, sugar & alcohol is discussed, always get ...

... I know so & so, 80 & 90 years old

... or I feel fine and eat what I want.

Docs have been telling for years, BP is high, sugars high, don't let it get higher, and cut back.   5 yrs ago, I decided to listen, as starting to feel like crap, with more inflammation than I think a 65 yr old should be experiencing.

BP back in 2020 high with 10 more kgs being carried around.

BP now <120/65 ish

Carbs are great, make you feel good, eat when hungry and until full, key is low fat, which blocks insulin receptors. In the past when nearly everyone was slim no one did keto type diets

In the past when everyone was slim, the didn't fill all the food on the shelves with sugar & hydrogenated oils.

I'm the opposite, high fat & protein, very low carb diet.  And feel good about it.  Not just mentally, but all the aches & pains I wrote of to old age, being 65 then, are gone now at 70.

I'm going to continue listening to my body, and the numbers from the blood tests.  All better without the carb, simple & complex.

I guess my point was that, at ;east for younger people, testing for A1C isn't the holy grail. Insulin sensitivity can show up years before the A1C tests show a problem with high glucose levels.  So, for them, why not alter their diet?  Why should they not start eating right?
