A 19-year-old motorcyclist was killed in the early hours of 5 February after crashing into the back of an excavator in the Ratchada-Huai Khwang tunnel. The excavator driver was unaware of the collision until a taxi driver alerted him.

At approximately 04:20, Lieutenant Chatchai Kamsanit, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) of Sutthisan Police Station, received a report of a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and an excavator on the outbound lane of the underpass at Ratchada-Huai Khwang intersection in Din Daeng district. Police officers, doctors from Ramathibodi Hospital, and rescue volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were dispatched to the scene.

Authorities discovered a grey motorcycle lying wrecked on the road with severe front-end damage. A black full-face helmet was found nearby. The motorcyclist, identified as Thanabodee Makkaphon, 19, was lying on his back in a pool of blood. He was wearing a long-sleeved blue T-shirt and grey shorts, with visible abrasions across his body and a severely fractured left leg. Approximately 30 metres away, an excavator was parked in the left lane.

Arun Thawinwan, 56, the excavator driver, told police that he had just finished work on an underground power cable project near the Thailand Cultural Centre. While driving the excavator back to the construction site on Ratchada Soi 18, a taxi driver flagged him down, informing him that a motorcycle had crashed into the back of his vehicle.

Unaware of the impact at the time, Mr. Arun stopped and returned to the scene, where he found the motorcycle overturned and the rider gravely injured. The victim later succumbed to his injuries.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and continuing their investigation, including questioning the excavator driver, to determine the circumstances of the crash before proceeding with legal action.
