There are so many benefits to frequenting the small mom and pop shops, some of which do a great job, and there's so much downside to supporting these huge corporate behemoths who usually offers  substandard products at higher than usual prices.

Of course the sheeples tend to prefer the places with lines where everyone goes, but some of us know better.

most small coffee shops will give a full hot cup coffee which tastes great by ordering a Latte Lorne '   or hot Latte ranging from 35 - 45 baht  ....     even the Bin Tao machines give a full cup of hot Latte for 35 baht.

seems you overpaid for less than half a cup of what looked like a cappuccino and not a hot Latte ...

"Latte Lorne" or the Bonanza Latte named after Lorne Green.

Wife went into an Amazon cafe in Lamphun Northern Thailand.

I had a latte coffee Carry out from Amazon hot. She had iced coffee.

As soon as she handed it to me the cup it felt very light.

I sent her back in to complain.

They told her that it

is correct you get 1 shot of whatever that means.

Is this normal. I feel done by at 65 baht for what was not even half a cup off coffee.

Maybe it's my fault but if I went into a pub and ordered a pint off beer and the they served you half a pint in a pint glass I would be very miffed.

Needless to say that we will not be going back to amazon again.

Plus the shipping time and import fees of ordering a cup of coffee from Amazon make it really expensive.

When you skip the "huge corporate behemoths" are you "stickin' it to the man" or "lettin' your freak flag fly"?

As Patrick Henry said: "Give me a small locally owned ethically sourced coffee shop or give me death!" they have so many benefits.

Even still I'm gonna buy coffee I like when and where it's convenient for me.

Sometimes that will be Starbuck's.

I wouldn't be too quick to claim the moral high ground.

Whilst I agree entirely about using local shops (use or lose it theory) you are totally wrong in your summation; in my experience those who crow on about Mom and Pop shops are usually those who live in the Boonies and have a limited choice.

To suggest that Lotus's, Big C and TOPS offer substandard products at higher prices is just false. Do you really  think Chang beer is cheaper at a Mom and Pop store than MAKRO? Where do you think these village shops buy most of their stock from?

For me, a Mom and Pop store is part of Thai culture and the main benefit is that of convenience = plus the fact that you can buy booze when the "huge corporate behemoths" have to adhere to the law.

So........a big plus from me for local shops but, please, let's not pretend they are 'better' than the big boys.

I've always preferred smaller, I've always preferred an artisanal approach, and I've always enjoyed supporting creative individuals in small shops. Yeah, I am sticking it to the man. I just don't like huge corporations at all.

I guess that is a functional description of a kettle.

What was that thing called again?

It's a translation thing... It translates like that from languages of people who actually can speak another language (or 2) apart from English. Thought that would be interesting to know for the monolinguists here 😄

Sadly it is one of Amazons many anomalies, I like a large cup of coffee to sit in store to drink it but it is an impossible request, resulting in a blank stare and no matter how I explain and pointing to the large mugs they have on top of the coffee machine my request always results in a complete disregard and a small cup is delivered,  WHY? I have not got a clue !
Apparently the large mugs are only for tea ?????

And so to get round this I order2 cups and request an empty mug which when the coffee arrives gets filled up to bewildered gapes from staff who find it impossible to comprehend my actions to obtain a large cup of coffee.

Quit obviously the brain dead moronic jobs worth who trains the staff suffers from the same lack of understanding.

I to have knocked Amazon coffee on the head and gone elsewhere, which is sad really because the coffee is not bad and it is not rocket science to put a little more water in a bigger cup is it AMAZON

Availability of chocolate fudge cake or lemon meringue pie or jam doughnuts can often be the deciding factor in where to buy a coffee.

Are you expecting too much? Yeah, sure you are. Amazon has been like that, for a long time. Only thing in their favor is they are at PTT stations. Hit the can, the 7, pick up latte, back on the road, bad coffee though.

Lots of Thai companies are the same. Wawee coffee was/is notorious for dixie cup lattes. Puke. I refuse to drink there.

As for small shops, mom & Pop small stores. Many of those just cannot throw out stale coffee. Thai economics.

Which brings us back to Starbucks. It’s fashionable to sneer and sheep need to do that, they need to run with a flock, Still while expensive, you actually get a real cup. I was going to say coffee but make it an espresso beverage. Thai Bev, the company that runs Starbucks Thailand, has/had a policy for stores NOT to brew up “coffee”, just sell expresso, as too few Thais drink it. If you brew a tank you have to throw it out after an hour. Again Thai economics, can’t do that.  Yes, a few Starbucks stores did and do brew up regular coffee but they’re in high volume tourist/expat areas. Not that there is anything wrong with that ... with espresso drinks, although, yes, they do seem a bit too swish. Hopefully that is changing now as brewed coffee is becoming trendy in Thailand.

I do drink occasionally at Hillkoff 'training' cafe, Mahidol store in CM, but its a one off shop. Quiet, they are happy to have you there. None of the neo hipster bearded digital gonad types, comparing tattoos. In CM that is a blessing.

If you want to drink cheep deleted beer, you buy it from the cheapest place, easy as that.

Enjoyed many nice moms and pops on the road, and much more preferable than any of the coffe chains.

Biggest hoax in coffe industry is Starbucks

It would be if that is the basis of your expectations.

A "pint" is an official measure and must be dispensed if used. Coffee is a different ball game and as suggested, best to shop around.

Why miffed?  Because they served me before you?  Because I only got a half pint?

It's all measured in Espresso Shots.

Normally when you order something they will ask which size you want. The size might be S, M, L or it might be one shot, double shot, something like that.

In your case your wife could have bought you a double shot. But apparently she didn't...

I remember in America buying a glass of orange juice and the glass was so full of ice I only got a couple of swallows, so next time I asked for a glass of orange juice, I asked for no ice (the drink was cold anyway) and I was handed the glass half full, I asked for the glass to be filled and I was told no! So I just walked away.

I used to to that way back when but then they caught on and stopped.

I order Americano black coffee at Amazon, excellent coffee very strong. 40 baht. You must have ordered an expresso. Hell 7-11 has good americano coffee 35 baht

What I've seen in my local Amazon's (Chiang Mai province), is that what used to be called Americano is now called Black Coffee on the menu. Black Coffee is 40 THB, but Americano much more expensive, 65 THB IIRC.

I think Amazon made this change like half a year ago or so.

It's probably the same in all Amazon's around the country. It's good to be aware of this, I think.
