A tragic accident in Samut Prakan claimed the life of a 47-year-old bed-bound man, believed to have been caused by a cigarette. The incident unfolded late last night in a single-storey rental property in Village 6, Khlong Dan, Bang Bo district.

Police Colonel Somchai Sakorn reported that the fire broke out around 11 p.m. on February 12. The man, identified as Boontham, was found deceased on his bed after the flames were extinguished.

The victim's brother, Boonlert, who discovered the fire upon returning from his job as a motorcycle taxi driver, recounted his desperate attempt to save his sibling. With the help of neighbors, they managed to douse the flames using hoses before emergency services arrived.

Boonlert shared that he had been caring for his brother, who became incapacitated due to an accident nearly a decade ago. Despite recurring warnings about his smoking habits, it is suspected that a dropped cigarette sparked the fatal fire. This devastating event underscores the dangers associated with smoking, especially for those with limited mobility, reported The Thaiger.
