but some visitors are calling for more relaxed alcohol rules.

In my experience, many tourists have been calling for alcohol sales sanity for at least the 20-odd years I've been living in Pattaya. Why are they only now paying any attention. is their non-tourism economy really that dire?

I think you are referring to a very small group of people, the laws make little or no sense and are outdated like many other laws in Thailand. 90 day reporting to name just 1

Oh yeah, I'm certainly not saying I agree with them—I just don't think it's an issue, and I don't understand why people get so freaked out by it. I guess I just feel indifferent about them when you consider the much bigger problems at hand.

Drinking zone - rarely read a more arrogant statement by a country which depends soooooo much on tourism. Next is "dirty farang" zone, shopping zone, bon23453ing zone and jump-out-of-the-condominium-zone?

Grown ups do not need zones - me thinks. You either allow it ..... or not. In Thailand's case the oligarch elite keeps on herding the underlings into all sorts of funny ideas which, in 99.9% of the cases, do not work. So forget the drinking zones and realize, that alcohol sales ban hours don't work like there is no corruption nor prostitution in the land - so I have been told 😉

Do people really struggle to go withoput alcohol just for a few days of the year?

indeed they do , they even struggle not to whinge about it on here regularly, the same people every time

It is embarrassing that the entire farang community (tourists and expats) is perceived as a group of people suffering from drug addiction and needing spaces all to themselves, like certain places in Europe where drug addicts can take drugs freely and safely.

Alcohol is truly a plague for humanity.

Exactly. They pretend to care so much about local businesses losing money, but that's just a smokescreen to hide their inability to control their alcohol dependency—or simply an excuse to take a dig at the Thais.
