If Greenland does become independent, they may choose to join NATO, which would oppose invasion by an enemy. Greenland has free healthcare, free education. What invader could offer that?

I am damn sure Greenlanders don't want America's screwed-up health and taxation system, and they don't want the inevitable carpetbaggers coming in to pillage their resources.
