President Trump threatened the EU with a 200% tariff on imported wines, champagnes, and other alcoholic products if the bloc did not remove a duty on whiskey.

He posted on his Truth Social platform:

The European Union, one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World, which was formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States, has just put a nasty 50% Tariff on Whisky. If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES. This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S.

I think hes referring to the fact that the Euros impose protectionist rules on product names so Champagne can only be made in France and that we have an agreement that only French Champagne can be called Champagne, except Korbel and Cooks, which are American Champagnes and labeled as such, but if it has bubbles, most folks call it Champagne here, so this topic is probably the stupidest example of Trump hate ever seen here and thats saying a lot.

Of course. But the issue is not what they call it, it’s the disproportionate tariffs. 

 

Trump’s position it that whatever the EU charges in tariffs on US wines, is what the US should charge on EU wines.

Whats your point? That Cooks is crap, no matter how you label it. 

 

Personally, I dont recall ever asking or being asked for "sparkling wine". It was always "pick up a bottle of Piper" or "grab some Dom", or Pick up some "cheap champagne". Undeducated palates like we have here in America cant tell the difference.

 

I guess I am an idiot too because I call sparking wine cheap champagne.

The fact of the matter is Champagne is a region and the French don't won't anyone who isn't French and from that region using the word champagne on their sparkling wines. Champagne of course is a sparkling wine and sparkling wine is of course what everyone calls champagne regardless of what's on the label. It's quite mad. I had some very nice Australian champagnes back in the day. Still called champagne back then. Loved the stuff. Great with a snort of coke.

There was a certain Thai PM not long ago who I noticed only appointed people who were stupider than him.  The full-display moment was when he was in exile and the street demonstrations were going on, he sent three minions to deal with the other side who were much like a redshirt version of the US's Three Stooges.  The difference here is that former PM was actually a successful and knowledgeable business man. 

It isn't easy for this guy in the US to find someone dumber than himself.  It has been reported that when King Charles requested an audience with his nibs one of his staff said "He probably wants to discuss Canada" to which another staffer said "what does the king have to do with Canada?"
