A once-idyllic holiday on the alluring shores of Phuket has turned into a distressing ordeal for British restauranteur Ricky Eury. The 39-year-old is now facing a critical battle for survival in a Thai hospital after a devastating road accident.

On Saturday, March 15, Eury was struck by a motorcycle while crossing a bustling street in the popular tourist destination. The motorcycle was driven by Russian tourists Sergei Medvedev and his wife Svetlana, who have since been arrested. The encounter left Eury with severe injuries, including multiple skull fractures, broken ribs, a shattered nose, and life-threatening brain haemorrhage.

Eury's family and loved ones are maintaining a vigil at his bedside at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. His parents, George and Annette, were shattered by the news and flew to Thailand immediately, along with his girlfriend Hannah Ryan and brother Joey. They were confronted with the terrifying possibility that Ricky might not make it through, recounts Hannah, also 39.

The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a dream retreat for Eury, who had been visiting Phuket since February for Thai-boxing training. Known for managing the award-nominated Gorilla Thai Kitchens in Bristol, Keury embraced fitness and the active lifestyle that the island offered.

Miracles seemed far in the shadows as Eury clung to life in the hospital's intensive care unit. Yet, against all odds, he survived the crucial 36 hours post-accident, a testament to his physical strength, says his father.

"The doctors say his fitness will aid his recovery. But we know the future remains uncertain," George candidly shared.

Eury has recently regained consciousness, but his memory is hazy, says his mother Annette. Despite the overwhelming odds, Ricky's spirit shows signs of resilience, though he continually asks the same questions, a testament to the long road ahead.

Compounding their distress is the lack of immediate access to Eury's travel insurance details, leaving the family with looming medical bills. They have already shelled out over 420,000 Thai Baht (£10,000) after Ricky was unable to confirm his insurance status due to the extent of his injuries.

Solomon Wilkinson, a friend of Ricky's, has taken an initiative to raise funds through a GoFundMe page to combat the spiralling costs.

Facing an indeterminate recovery journey, Eury's family vows to stay by his side for as long as needed. "Ricky comes first. We’re living day by day," affirms George, a retired fisheries manager from Devon.

Despite the uncertainty, the flickers of progress seen in Ricky provide some solace. Medical professionals remain cautiously optimistic, though it is evident that healing will require considerable time and patience. As they face the challenges ahead, Ricky's family is fortified by the small victories and the undying hope for a full recovery, reported The Thaiger.

Yet another GoFundMe. Horrible for the family and the guy. Shame on the Russians once again acting like careless a-holes. However, I have never heard of an insurance, that must be confirmed by the victim?

Sounds he has at least got travel insurance - that's good

yes indeed but what sort of insurance did the Russian have ?, a lot of these accidents are caused by reckless driving by one party yet they never seem liable to pay or invoke their 3rd party liability insurance

I see no need currently for a GFM effort, it should not be difficult to ascertain his insurance details from his documentation or booking details

nevertheless I hope he makes a speedy recovery

Would point out insurance doesn't have to pay for injury caused by unlawful acts.

The exclusion is in respect to the insured. Legal liability for injury to  third parties is typically covered.

Nope, the driver that hit and run me had 1st class insurance.

Directly he admitted it was deliberate his insurance company said we only cover accidents, you will need to claim compensation through the courts.

But they did pay for my m/c repairs as an act of goodwill.

So? What do you think Legal Liability insurance is? It is for LEGAL LIABILITY arising from the  event. The information provided is  correct. It is not for VOLUNTARY payment.

If you wanted compensation, it was your obligation to bring a civil suit. The insurer  has a duty to defend. If the court says the driver is legally liable, the insurer would have paid on the insured's behalf.  The same rules apply on your home country motor liability (except in jurisdictions where there is a no fault law).

The russkies should've been executed on the spot. They are the lowest life form in the universe. Whenever they harm a human, dog, horse, whatever they should be offed immediately.

After they pay for the damage they have caused i hope?

Imo the money the Thai government charges from arriving tourists should also help to cover cases like this.

It would show Thailand is trying to take care of the people who bring money into the country.

Yes,i know,

Thats one of the reasons we have no fault in the US. The injured one gets his bills paid.

Liability insurers aren't keen to pay claims arising out of the intentional acts of their insureds, and as a result policies have exclusions with respect to intentional acts. This includes motor policies. Not to have this exclusion would invite a moral hazard.

Then you are naive.

A person can say they have insurance, but without evidence of a policy number, or contact number or insurer name, the coverage cannot be confirmed.

Sure, so he would have talked to nobody, and the relatives have no clue what insurance company he have used. Neither does he have phone banking that he paid the insurance with, so you that way can find the name of the company.

Does he even have  insurance? Why start a gofundme before you know that. If there is no info about a travel insurance in his belongings, most probably he has no insurance at all.

I cary a card of my travel insurance in my wallet. As long as the wallet is not stolen, it's easy to figure out that I have insurance and who to call. Additionally a printout of what is covered in my luggage.

Nope, insurer didn't pay or defend him in court.

His parents paid the compensation ordered by the court, his uncle was his lawyer.

I didn't ask the court for compensation, I didn't have a lawyer.

Public prosecutor Vs my attacker.

I was just a witness/victim.
