Trapped Antarctic Scientists Plead for Rescue Amid Fear after Assault

Maybe I lost the plot.

There are 9 of them, one is a woman, one is the suspect, so seven able bodied men aren't able to in some way restrain and control the suspect?

I'm assuming this isn't some mass murderer psycho who is going to kill everyone in their sleep, but some guy thats gone a little bat sh***t crazy down there

I've always iamgined what it would be like if I lived in one of those stations during wimter. Looks like back in 1982 smoking regs were more relaxed I would hate to have to go outside at  minus forty to have a fag

Maybe the guy is Black and the team is full of left-wing idiots so they don't want to do anything about it?

Why would they take a rap singer, soccer player or basketball star to Antarctica?

Have you ever actually taken an aggressive individual out? It's only in movies that would work. For starters, it's unlikely any of them know how to fight a guy that could thrash them, and without training they will have no chance of working as a team to take him out.

That's only the first step- if they did manage to restrain him, what happens then?

Short of termination or S A spending millions to rescue them, it's a puzzle for sure.

A team of South African scientists stationed at the isolated Sanae IV Antarctic base has made a desperate plea for rescue after a researcher allegedly attacked colleagues and threatened to kill one of them. With ten months remaining before they can be evacuated, the group is stranded 2,500 miles from home, completely cut off by extreme weather and shifting ice floes.

The distressing message, which surfaced through South Africa’sTimes, painted a picture of a team living in constant fear—not of the harsh Antarctic conditions, but of one of their own. “Regrettably, [his] behaviour has escalated to a point that is deeply disturbing,” the email stated.

“Specifically, he physically assaulted [name withheld], which is a grave violation of personal safety and workplace norms.” The email also claimed that the individual had threatened to kill a team member, further heightening the tension within the isolated group. “I remain deeply concerned about my own safety, constantly wondering if I might become the next victim,” the author wrote.

Even more disturbing, the researcher in question was accused of sexually assaulting another team member. “His behaviour has become increasingly egregious, and I am experiencing significant difficulty in feeling secure in his presence,” the message continued. “It is imperative that immediate action is taken to ensure my safety and the safety of all employees.”

Just thought about it, but how would they be rescued? If there is an air strip it would likely be blocked by snow drifts and too dangerous to land on, if by ship, the seas are dangerous in winter and the sea ice would be a problem in getting close enough.

They might possibly evacuate and travel to another base, but in winter they might die anyway. No easy answers- welcome to the winter over from hell!

I wonder what HQ back in Sth Africa is going to do about it. The ball is in their court now.

They should try appealing to his better nature. I remember watching a film based in Antartica where it worked for Mumble.

They have two choices. Continue to live in fear from a man that has already threatened one of them or gang up on him, which would be very easy no matter what he knows. After taking him down, they lock him in a room and bring him what he needs to survive daily. He brought this upon himself and deserves no pardon, then you wait until help arrives.

I'm guessing, but IMO it's a fight over the women, and probably her in particular. I suspect she had a special guy, and someone didn't like that. Like I said, it was a situation that was going to end in tears. What numptie put a woman like that into that sort of situation? Madness.

My opinion, but based on actual experience. We had 2 permanent females on base in summer and 100 guys. It was an interesting time. Remember we are talking about alpha guys.

Alpha guys aren't any more masculine or dangerous than others, besides the fact they are narcissists who should be avoided.

??????? Apart from a spot of insomnia, no one got disoriented while I was there. I enjoyed everything about being there, and I spent most of my time outside. It wasn't till it got below - 30 celcius that it got really cold. Once I acclimatized, I was able to go outside in a track suit, as long as it wasn't windy. Wind is the killer, not the temperature.

A person can die from hypothermia in above freezing temperatures if they aren't clothed correctly. Wind does make a difference but above freezing temps kill people every year because they aren't dressed properly, and if they are wet it happens much faster.

I'm well aware of hypothermia, thank you. I was down there to know.

I once thought I was going to die from the cold ( while dressed properly ), and climbed into the vehicle ( unheated- we didn't need heaters in vehicles, as not mummy's boys ) so they could find my body. Obviously I didn't, as still here. Not a happy experience.

Every time I came in from outside I had so much ice ( from breath ) on my face I had to stick my head in a basin of water to get the balaclava off.

Not a question of what he knows- a question of what they know. Most guys can't fight, and a collection of guys that can't fight and have no training would be easily defeated by someone that is big and strong. Also, if he feels threatened, he's going arm himself with a club or something.

Did you not read the OP, it's months till "help" arrives?

BTW, are you going to be the one that opens the door to give him his "needs"?

LOL. During my tour we had 3 scientists on base- a tough primary school kid could have defeated them with one hand tied behind his back- big bunch of softies.

Wasn't a problem we would have had though. of the 11 of us, 2 were military trained, and 4 of us were pretty fit.

Also about 50 US navy guys 15 minutes away.

Three guys that can't fight well can tackle another and subdue him by weight alone. In fact, 3 women that are being threatened can also do this, if they all do it at once. If they don't want to live under a threatening environment, they will do something about it. This isn't a group of boys but adults. Unless of course he's a strong Sumo wrestler they can't get their arms around, where they could use anything they can find as a weapon.  He's the one threatening another, which means he's probably not strong enough or able to fight. People that threaten with violence will just use it with no need to tell anyone of their actions. Those that threaten are using a threat to make fear in those he believes will fear him.

Months until help arrives means you lock him in a room after taking him down and tying him up, then give him what he needs until others come to arrest him and take him away. Food and water and a bucket to let him do his business. if there's a problem, he doesn't eat. This is one against many adults. Not Bruce Lee against a group of Thai teenagers. Of course I would be the one that opens the door, and why not? If he's a huge man that I could not think I could handle alone ,I would have  something in my hand that could.

Never underestimate anyone in a fight by yourself, or else you might learn a hard lesson. Alpha doesn't mean strong. it means narcissist that thinks they deserve more when doing less. Betas are what run families and the world. Alphas sit back and take advantage of those who aren't aware of their intentions. Military trained doesn't mean much against a person who does it as a lifestyle, just as a doctor isn't one to go to with advice about nutrition.
