What pisses me off is that I can buy a bag of coke or a woman's time almost effortlessly but it is getting harder and harder to buy fresh fruit, authentic Thai streetfood, or a vape.

Go to a fresh fruit market

Restaurants are Bangkok's saving grace, before getting on the plane and getting the Hell outta there.

I found an area I like. I know the staff in a restaurant. It's a nice Thai area.

My brother lives in Bangkok. I feel so bad for him but he feels it's the best place to be in Thailand for his business. You couldn't pay me to live there.

And no one will.

And the pussy.

Finally a topic I can admire the post.   Bangkok has changed in unfortunate ways viz the Bangkok that made me smile night and day when landing here to stay 10 years ago.  Evolution is it? The overall result of the struggle to recover from Covid?   Unknowable probably.   My complaint is the congestion and overcrowding on the roads and public transportation which seems to be unmitigated and increasing.  Trying to avoid it, on foot, makes the sometimes ridiculous shrines to overbuilt iron and the poor quality service of pedestrian crossings - climbing ladders without the relief of escalators or elevators.  As if  there was never a thought to the result of stimulating the success of attracting tourism and replacing a civil city with built up highrise buildings.  That's my gripe.

Still happy in Bangkok after 50 years. Friendly people, good food, fun nightlife. My favourite city, worldwide.

Well in the nightlife world that was never my thing,

Good dinner, nice hotel and back to BKK or DMK the next morning.

But each to their own and I'm sure there are some alternate 'attractions' in the nighttime hours for those inclined for something more than dinner and a few drinks

I'm with you on the shirtless thing.

You're not at the beach, just put on a damn shirt.

You're right it's not just farangs, but nobody in a Western city thinks it's OK to walk around shirtless, often displaying a less than adonis like body.

Yet they land in BKK and off comes the shirt, flab and all!

why dont they just use the traffic light system like in western countries instead of these silly pedestrian crossings?

and give tickets if you cross the red light.

The do have lights at pedestrian crossings...    According to comments on this forum: In Pattaya they turned them off because the cars were ignoring them anyway....

And yes... the BiB should be giving tickets - but when 20 motorcyclists without helmets are at a junction outside a Police Box and the police do nothing - then we can the true extent of the apathy towards enforcement of traffic regulations.

Nothing wrong with making observations...  Many listed are factually accurate.

That does not make Thailand a bad place to be - it just means like anywhere Thailand has its faults, yet for many there is a strong net postive to being here.

Nothing is perfect and there are other threads where the strong positives are discussed.

Having a health outlook allows us to see both negative aspects and positive aspects of travel and life anywhere without it impacting us - making simple observations and discussion these facets both positive and negative is perfectly normal.

However, the "Go home if you don't like it" type of response highlights a lack of critical thought and an inability to hold a discussion.

I'm sure you don't like the 'dangers of crossing the roads here'...  or you might not like some 'Thai dishes that don't suit you' etc...     If you were to make such a comments does that mean you should go home ??

a car stopped and let me cross where there were neither lights nor a pedestrian crossing.

no rhyme or reason.

#1 Pet hate - Motorcyclists riding straight towards you on the wrong side of the road, if you don't slow or swerve you've clipped them...

#1 Pet Positive - the way so few people get confrontational, especially on the roads when people do the dumb stuff described above - one of the great positives of Thailand is the lack of confrontationalism ... but thats a double edged sword as it allows people to continue doing the silly stuff, especially on the roads.

I've done the same plenty of times while driving... and the look of 'distrust' is quite amusing...

I've stopped to let a pedestrian cross and they really hesitate and look extremely unsure as if they think the moment they step onto the road I'm going to gun it at them !!!!

It is of course sensible road (pedestrian) safety on their part as giving way to pedestrians is by far the exception here.

The smell, the trash, the taxi drivers, the attitudes of the locals, waitresses, hookers, the overhead cabling, the flooding during monsoon season, the pollution, the traffic, the noise pollution, the ding dong in 7/11, cops shaking tourists down for nothing, the cracks in the pavement, motorbikes riding on said pavement, the lack of clean green spaces, the lack of bins to throw away rubbish...

I could literally go on all day!

You could, I suppose... but the very fact that the"ding-dong" of a 7-Eleven door ranks among your emotional triggers speaks volumes about the depth of your psychological afflictions and the profoundly skewed lens through which you view the world.

You’ve managed, with astonishing consistency, to twist even life’s simplest pleasures into points of grievance, Bob.

You've turned 'turning a positive into a negative' an art form.

It patently clear that your mental wellbeing is not so much impacted by your environment, but by yourself alone....  If only you could flip a switch and open up the balance of your perspective you could find greater enjoyment in life, Bob.
