Greenland’s Prime Minister Condemns U.S. Visit as a “Highly Aggressive” Move

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute B. Egede has criticized an upcoming visit by U.S. officials, including Second Lady Usha Vance, calling it a “highly aggressive” act that further strains relations following President Donald Trump’s continued push to annex the Danish territory.

According to a statement from the White House, Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, will travel to Greenland this week to attend the island’s national dogsled race and celebrate its culture. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is also expected to visit, a move that has sparked concern among Greenlandic leaders.

In an interview with Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq on Sunday, Egede expressed strong opposition to Waltz’s presence. “What is the national security adviser doing in Greenland? The only purpose is to demonstrate power over us,” he said. “His mere presence in Greenland will no doubt fuel American belief in Trump’s mission — and the pressure will increase.”

Trump’s interest in Greenland has reignited global discussions about the island’s strategic importance, particularly due to its vast reserves of rare earth minerals essential for high-tech industries. His insistence that the U.S. could acquire Greenland—whether through force or economic influence—has been firmly rejected by both Denmark and Greenland.

“I think we’re going to get it one way or the other,” Trump declared earlier this month during a speech to Congress. Egede, who has long advocated for Greenland’s independence, lamented that diplomatic efforts to engage with the U.S. are consistently ignored. “It just bounces off Donald Trump and his administration in their mission to own and control Greenland,” he said.

Though Egede’s party, Inuit Ataqatigiit, suffered a defeat in Greenland’s parliamentary elections earlier this month, he remains in office until a new governing coalition is formed. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the likely next leader after his party’s victory, also condemned the timing of the American visit.

“The fact that the Americans know very well that we are still in a negotiating situation and that the municipal elections have not yet concluded, they still capitalize on the moment to come to Greenland, once again, which shows a lack of respect for the Greenlandic population,” Nielsen told Sermitsiaq.

The White House has maintained that Vance’s visit is purely cultural. “Ms. Vance and the delegation are excited to witness this monumental race and celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity,” the statement read. She will be accompanied by her son and other U.S. officials on visits to historical sites and events, including the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race. It remains unclear whether any past U.S. delegations have attended the event, let alone one including a second lady.

Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953, when it gained greater autonomy. Since 2009, it has exercised increased control over areas such as mineral rights, policing, and legal matters, but Denmark still oversees foreign policy, defense, and monetary policy. Additionally, Greenland benefits from Denmark’s ties to the European Union and NATO.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged the significance of the visit in a statement to Reuters. “Something we take seriously,” she said, emphasizing that Denmark values cooperation with the U.S. but insists that any agreements must adhere to the principles of sovereignty.

Although Greenlandic leaders have consistently rejected the idea of annexation, they remain open to economic partnerships with the U.S. in areas such as rare earth mining, tourism, and diplomatic collaboration. A January poll conducted by Danish and Greenlandic newspapers revealed that 85% of Greenlanders opposed becoming part of the U.S., with nearly half perceiving Trump’s interest as a direct threat.

Adding to the controversy, Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., visited Greenland earlier this year. He sparked further debate with his social media post, stating, “Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside world. Make Greenland Great Again!”

As tensions continue to rise, the U.S. delegation’s visit may further complicate relations between Greenland, Denmark, and Washington, reinforcing the perception that the Trump administration remains determined to assert influence over the Arctic territory.

When will Trump realise that that the majority of countries and the majority of the global population hate him?

She is going for a dog race? Maybe she will have a chance of winning.😉

In case trump want to annex Greenland by force who can stop him from doing it?

Every where there are powerful nations that annex territory and nobody can stop them!

He is correct. Nearly everything that Trump does is incredibly toxic, extremely disrespectful, unbelievably arrogant, incredibly dumb, and damaging to the US in the long term.

All he is doing is precipitating the decline, and making America less influential by the day.

Why would those with Danish citizenship give up free Healthcare, and a safety net for seniors? A friend of mine from Holland just recently put his mother in a rather luxurious nursing home, he said it's the equivalent of many five-star hotels that he's been to. She has a large, luxurious room with a private balcony overlooking the river. His total outlay is 900 euros monthly. A trashy facility in the US is $9,000 a month and a nice facility is $15,000 a month and up.

I know couples who spend $2000 to $3,000 a month on health insurance alone, in the US. It is an unregulated mafia.

Just another reason why Greenland and Canada would never choose to be a part of the US. In the process their quality of life would diminished dramatically.

In Denmark, the welfare state is characterised by an extensive social security system and a high degree of income equality. All Danish citizens have equal access to education and health care regardless of their social and financial background. Similarly, every citizen is entitled to a limited compensation for loss of income due to unemployment, disability, or illness – just to name a few of the public services that the welfare system provides.

The welfare system does indeed benefit each individual citizen but the main purpose of the Danish welfare model is to ensure healthcare and education for all citizens in order to provide high quality human capital/first class employees of great benefit to the taxpaying companies and hence to the Danish economy.

In other words, the polar opposite of the US, where if an older couple does not have hugely expensive health care, they could lose everything with one illness.

So, why would any Dane or Greenlander choose to become American? A land owned and controlled by Big pharma, corrupt lobbyists, greedy out of control corporations and a highly dysfunctional government, let by a foolish maniac. They would have to be insane.

But ... at least he got the egg prices down.

Besides, from certain people in here, we know that Trump loves peace so of course he would not threaten Greenland, a close northern neighbour, and other countries.

I wonder when those people open their eyes and see the many signs that the US in on the way to become a totalitarian state.

Why they just don't let them in and declare them as unwanted persons?

Not much difference if Trump tries to Annex Greenland than Putin Invading Crimea or Ukraine.
Given 85% of the autonomous region opposes it it would not only be undemocratic but outright illegal it would be like 'buying' (which he suggested to Denmark) Scotland or Wales from the UK!  The guy has got a screw loose.

He will end up sitting next to Putin in the ICC hopefully.

POTUS has "not ruled out military force".

That would make him an enemy combatant.

Perhaps the Danes will send a Viking hit squad to rid the world of the menace that is 47. Blood eagle in Lafayette Park would be welcome by most of the world.

Anyone else notice the deafening silence of the resident MAGA cult members in this thread?

Fifteen hours since this thread started, and not a single post of them. Maybe they are crying in a corner?

It would be an act of war. Greenland is still a part of Denmark which is part of the EU.

The Americans have not learnt their lesson from Afghanistan, Iraq or Vietnam. The Greenlanders are at home in the ice and snow. Bubba from Alabama  Tyrell from Mississippi are not.

Yep, he is the peacemaker. No way would he send missiles in to Yemen, 5 children dead, no way - he's a peaceful man.

The US is setting itself up for a massive fall. And it will be fully deserved.

Are you sure that they exist? Standard practice in Yemen  is to lie.

How else do you propose to have Yemen stop attacking and hijacking ships?

They were doing this long before Israel, extorting money from shipping companies.
