Sounds true to me: lack of police interest;

Douglas reported the incident to Pattaya police but faced a disappointing response, with officials expressing scepticism about taking significant action. Investigations did uncover CCTV footage showing Douglas being escorted on a motorbike after the assault. However, claims by one of the women about visiting a nearby 7-Eleven were unverified, as the store agreed to share footage only with authorities.

The victim's attempts to gather evidence, including consulting a lawyer and approaching police for further help, were met with challenges. Staff at the bar, seemingly reluctant to cooperate, echoed concerns over the incident reflecting badly on the establishment.

What would he have to gain with a false story; why would he hire a lawyer if the story wasn't true?

I'm suggesting this is a fake story, in total.

I saw some stills from the video of the beatdown in Pattaya this morning.  The gang of Thais look to be having so much fun as they rain down blows with feet and motorcycle helmet onto the poor guy's head.  Likely they were very happy to have an excuse to attack the guy, possibly they wanted to kill him.

Violence like that doesn't come out of nowhere.  People should think carefully before choosing Thailand as a holiday destination.
