Lived near Lopburi now for 25 years, it is OK you have the old palace and grounds and museum old building, I like it, not many farangs around, it is the home of a missionary society language training or was? plus a few teachers.

Must be 25 years ago now I had the misfortune to go to Pattaya for a day, not my cup of tea by far, everyone to they own

PS, Our immigration office in and out, extension done, plus 90 day 35 minuets, nice staff, never a problem, no que.

pretty much anyone with half a brain knows the monkeys in lopburi have become a huge problem, attacking locals an tourist alike.

Always easy to research a place before you travel there, to see what's needed and what precautions to take. You're an Australian, and surely know about the wildlife there, that many should be avoided and kept at a distance if you want to study them. There are many videos online where monkeys in Thailand are attacking people just for walking by, and it's always cautioned not to feed any animals, as they lose their fear of man and come at them later demanding. Monkeys cant tear a person up very quick. Just watch them from a distance and enjoy their antics.

Recently had to have my pickup repaired in Lopburi City. Wait time was four days, so did a deep dive of hotels and layout of the city. Ultimately, decided to go down to Bangkok instead while truck was being repaired. Problem with Lopburi is its layout. There's the old town part where the ruins and monkeys are, then there's the Big C, Makro, HomePro, Tops stretch, and finally the business section around the bus terminal, which practically speaking are not really in walking distance from one another. If you don't have wheels, there are dirt cheap song taews that connect all the areas, but figuring out bus stops and where to get off for first time visitors can be a challenge. Plenty of people speak English, and people are friendly. Another strategy might be to stay one or two nights in the old town section, then move for a day to the Big C strip (Hop Inn looked half-decent and very close to Big C) for the convenience of the food malls and shopping, and then stay in the area around the bus station (there's a zoo and temples in this area) which would be convenient if you depart by bus.

I think you are stupid to think of a trip to Lopburi,  you are stupid to feed those aggressive monkeys thinking it's ok to do.  

 

WTH wouldn't you just spend 2,000 baht and head to Bang Sean or Pattaya or the beach nearby for 3 night then 2 nights somewhere else not to far away. 

 

some folks just ask for trouble.

so silly me decides I want to see monkeys and pat them and talk with them and I even had thoughts of cup of coffee etc 

 

I found a car service Bangkok to Lopburi 2000 baht ,

I had bags to take so couldn't get the train 

 

I booked a hotel for 5 nights so I could have enough time 

The hotel was cheap at 500 baht a night although it's a 15 minutes trip by Grab motorbike to the monkeys ( no grab cars here) 

 

Yesterday I started my goal to meeting my new friends and ended up paying 60 B to get into a ruined old temple grounds ,I'm the only person in there and the Sun was hot !

I went around the grounds to see the monkeys ,and at first I was cautious,I walked over and threw some food I had bought and they all rushed over 

 

Suddenly a security guard rushes to me shouting "no feed monkeys ,no feed monkeys !!

 

I looked at him in shock 

They were happy even smiling at me as I introduced myself standing near them inside the temple grounds even an old grandfather type monkey 

The guard came over shouting at me so I went OUTSIDE the temple gates at the back ,my new friends followed me and I sat in the ground ( with my sun hat on)  then one climbed on my back and suddenly hand slapped my face from behind 

It hurt and I screamed,then suddenly a small one ran and tried to take my hat ,and then I got up and ran they chased me 

A workman at a construction site nearby ran to me with a stick trying to hit them , then the security guard runs shouting at me 

 

I hate this Lopburi I want to leave early, I'm thinking late  tonight as I sit in this hotel room to get a GRAB motorbike back to that temple with the monkeys and that monkey street and asking the driver to wait for me as I try to see who the leader of the monkeys is to tell them , I tried to get the hotel receptionist to translate this to the Grab motorbijebthan I want to go tonight at midnight to that street behind the monkey temple ,get him to wait whilst I spoke to them about my assault,but as she was translatini,he shouts No no and rides off fast !!

 

 

Unfortunately people can't speak english here ,it's a hassle to explain,

 

I want to leave Lopburi I was assaulted

I've had the same experience with those Lopburi monkeys. One minute they're docile seemingly completely disinterested in you, and the next second they're on your back trying to pull your glasses off your face or checking the back of your head for fleas with their scratchy little paws. They seem to enjoy startling people.

On my very first trip to Thailand back in '86 was at the monkey compound at the Chiang Mai zoo. The monkeys could easily reach through the enclosure and I decided to extend my arm out for some inter-species bonding action. I can't remember the species of monkey, but it suddenly got its hand around my wrist and with super natural strength started pulling my fingers towards its mouth. They probably heard my scream up on Doi Suthep mountain. But ever since then I keep a safe distance from those critters. Trust me, they are very strong.

I love Lopburi. Once you know how to deal with the monkeys (easy) its a photogs dream.*
