The tariffs are reciprocal, meaning the penguins must have been involved in unfair trading practices

Hahaha maybe one of the seals is from the Navy and the penguins were stealing it's fish or something, anything is possible in OoompaTrumpa land

Everybody knows penguins are smuggling fentanyl from their base at the South Pole into the US, just look at the way they walk, they're plainly high as kites.

Plus the disrespect they showed Trump and Vance in the Oval Office.

Tie-less and constantly chatting between themselves.

There are no penguins at the south pole. :coffee1:

Why don't you go look at a map of Antarctica?

There has to be a few jokes in this one.

Penguins seem to be taking the brunt of "Lobotomisation Day"

Heard and McDonald Islands near Oz, only inhabited by penguins and seals.

No imports or exports but 10% on anything which is nothing sent to the US.

Obviously Elon has been too efficient in DOGE and appears to have fired anyone with a brain, there are a bunch of tiny islands in the middle of nowhere that if they do have humans on them don't export anything to America and have been hit with tariffs between 10-30%.

How did they decide all of this, get a bunch of guys in a room and have a game of bingo or something?

Utter madness, but inevitable stupidity with the man at the helm.

It probably didn't occur to you that countries with high tariffs might use such territories to avoid tariffs by routing goods through these places.   By putting tariffs on such places it simply removes this possibility.

There are scientific research camps sometimes but the penguins have feelings too.

Your lack of sense of humour is showing through with this and your following two posts. Lighten up.

According to World Bank export data, the U.S. imported $1.4 million (A$2.23 million) worth of goods from Heard Island and McDonald Islands in 2022, with the vast majority classified as "machinery and electrical" products. The specific nature of these imports remains unclear.

Heard and McDonald Islands: 10% (charges U.S. 10%)

Yawn.

The minimum possible tariff rate is 10%. That is given to countries that have net zero, perfectly balance trade with the US. Since the penguins don't export anything to the US, and don't buy anything from the US, it's a net zero country and therefore qualifies for the 10% tariff.

Some people will look for anything to disparage the new post globalism economic order.  Even making nonsensical threads like this.

I don't think the penguins and seals would consider it nonsense I have heard through Penguin Social they are considering reciprocal tariffs on the US

False, The 10% figure is the minimum for every country (except partially Mexico and Canada) regardless of whether they run a trade surplus or deficit with the USA.

The truth isn't quite as exciting as you guys would like it to be, I'm afraid:

The Guardian has also reported that an analysis of US import data and shipping records suggests that tariffs imposed on the Heard and McDonalds Islands, as well as Norfolk Island, are based on incorrect data.

It found shipments had been wrongly labelled as coming from the territories, rather than their actual places of origin.

Yet, "according to export data from the World Bank, the islands have, over the past few years, usually exported a small amount of products to the US.

But in 2022 the US imported US$1.4m (A$2.23m; ) from the territory, nearly all of it unnamed "machinery and electrical" products".
