How come they don't understand that week-long water throwing is actually bad for business?

They buy rancid water at exorbitant prices; they may have to pay medical bills for eye/ear infections; they do not frequent restaurants to eat in wet clothes; they may well need a new phone/camera.

400,000 revellers not eating for a week, must be the biggest hunger strike anywhere.

When people get soaked in water, they don't go into restaurants, bars or clubs. And many avoid going out altogether! Either way, businesses lose a lot of money.

How is it possible to be so stupid and not understand this?

Because seeing you get angry is worth the cost.

I checked some of the Pattaya CCTVs, definitely quieter than usual and yes bad for business, many massage ladies i know have gone home or avoiding travelling

My Mrs is telling me it is subdued in the village too. Not as many people about as years past, at the temple, in the streets. She seems to think people have less money and are concerned what the future holds. Things rarely hold up to childhood memories.

water splashing usually stops at about 7pm except for 18th and 19th but not this time, soi buakeow at 1am 14th Monday they were still at it soaking people that very obviously did not want to participate - saw some very angry exchanges taking place with these idiots

Their country, their holiday, if you dont want to be drenched, stay away from the street parties

Agree.... The people seem to enjoy the holiday. They do not worry about a week of business faltering or closing. This is a time to travel, visit family, play water and have fun with parties. The government knows this also which is why they extended the holiday. More money spent means more poor people to control. But it is ok. Those people will be happy no work for a week and get to se their families.

The Songkran week has turned into a misery week.

The foreigner's have spoilt the Thai celebrations in Pattaya.

Their aggressive water throwing, high powered water pumps.

It's no longer fun out there.

They are stupid? Who?

Thais love their way of living, like to have fun, to sing and dance. And work.

How stupid is it to celebrate (and being off work) Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, all based on fairy tales?

😳

Never 😔

I beg to differ, maybe in isolated places like soi 7/8 it goes on past 8pm which is easy to avoid but when it goes into other areas like buakoew a main route to everywhere then impossible to avoid

I have nothing against songkran but as reflected in this thread it is the 7+ days in pattaya that pretty much everyone here disagrees with, I have attended songkran in different locations and not one goes on for days, Hua Hin was one day - bangkok two days etc etc, pattaya is quite frankly a horrendous experience

You must be a newbie. You certainly know nothing about the Thais to speak of, if you don't understand why Pattaya is the way it is.

If you had been elsewhere in LOS during Songkran you'd know that it's like that all over, just not as long as in Pattaya.

There is more to life for Thais than profit, which is a hard concept for capitalists, I know.

Let me rephrase. You forgot a word.. There is little more to life than profit for them. Songkran is their escape from dealing with money problems and work. It is their escape. You should not be detrimental simply because some foreigners do not understand Thais. I know that is a hard concept for you being Democratic. For Thais. This is their fun. For Pattaya, this is why foreigners go there as tourists. So yeah, they will do it as much as possibly allowed whether you as an expat like it or not. It will draw more tourists to their bars to drink and throw water and watch the women. Songkran generates a lot of income from tourists. Both locally and internationally. Expats like you seem to forget the fun you had when you did your first Songkran. Or perhaps you never participated in it due to old age or being grumpy. By the way, being wet does not stop a foreigner or Thai from going to a place to sit down to eat. Just as, restaurants will not be allowing water fights in their doorway. .

That's funny, all getting a boot in

Tomorrows news. foreigner gets beaten down by Thai security guards at bar on Soi 6.

I do not see why the Thai man attacked? The other guy was just walking around in circles pointing fingers.

The security came out and got into his face and then swung first punching the foreigner in the face then kicking him while on the ground.

I thought Pattaya police had reigned in those guards and trained them in not attacking foreigners?

If I was you I would put my glasses on and look at the video again.

Blind Freddy could see the guy did something wrong, being a goose.

He did something before the video started, it wasn't shown.

The whole street wanted to beat the guys head in.

CCTV or reports will show what he did to deserve the beating, sounds like the Thai man was a hero

Simple, no need to complicate things, your comment regarding first punch was not needed.

The guy got what he deserved.

The foreigner assaulted a Thai woman.
