How stupid is China for retaliating to Trumps tariffs?

It's impossible that a man in his position can be a blazing idiot, but I suppose it is possible that he can be incredibly arrogant and highly ignorant. Those same qualities seem to apply to Bessent, Navarro, Hesgeth, Vance, and Trump. He sure knows how to surround himself by clowns, doesn't he?

Lutnick isn't stupid.  And he knows exactly what's he's doing.  Look up his background.

Presently, he's playing the part as a member of Trump's cabinet, espousing Trump's agenda. Some people think he may have ulterior motives, though.  In any event, I'll leave  that issue alone.  But whatever you do, do not think that the man is an idiot.

Now add beef to Australia—a country with a strong trade surplus and one of the world’s top beef exporters, including to the U.S.

Aussies prefer grass-fed, hormone-free, high-end Wagyu. U.S. feedlot beef—possibly with BSE concerns? Not exactly in demand.

But hey, Trump only hires the best people.

Trying to sell this stuff to these markets? —Like sand to the desert. Or logic to a Trump appointee.

I guess Argentina wouldn't be a great market either 🤣.

In looking at this I found a wiki article on this, interesting parallels to what's happening today versus 120 years later - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentine_beef:-

In Chile, heightened taxes for the import of Argentine cattle in 1905 led to the meat riots, one of the first massive protests in Santiago. The price of meat was kept artificially high by the government, by means of the combination of a special tariff applied to cattle imports from Argentina, to protect the domestic producers, and a runaway inflation. The riots lasted from October 22 until October 27, and between 200 and 250 people were killed over this period, while more than 500 were injured.

Thailand needs to prepare for receiving all those goods, originally destined for USA, to start arriving here at fire sale prices. This will kill most manufacturers in Thailand.

USA is on the lookout for "country of origin washing" so I hope some Thai doesn't get the idea of making a quick buck, by buying the Chinese products and relabeling them as made in Thailand. If Thai exporters get caught, Donald will be very unhappy with Thailand.

I havent seen you post any “facts”. Just insults

What we are seeing here in the comments toward you is a result from dynamic systemic cultural engineering. Arriving from a shift towards communist / Marxist / Socialist ideology .

No no no. You got me all wrong. I love him. I think it’s wonderful that Trump is POTUS. He’s the best thing that ever happened to China. I hope he gets 3rd and maybe even 4th term.

Well, I suppose a smart person can get sucked into the vortex (in the quest for power) of an imbecile and learn to support idiotic policy.

Agree. In the video, you gotta love his comment on selling corn to India—a country with a surplus and a strong preference for non-GMO. That’s like selling coal to Newcastle.

Then there’s the proposal to sell rice to Asia. You know, Asia—the region that invented it and already owns the global market.

Now add beef to Australia—a country with a strong trade surplus and one of the world’s top beef exporters, including to the U.S.

More examples of low quality, or tainted American exports people don't want. Their arrogance acts as a blinder to the real facts. But, truth is not truth, right?

And we shudder at the thought of big Don being unhappy. Wait a minute. Isn't that his state of mind day and night?

I would if I could. Problem is that nobody dares to bet against China. Maybe you would? Every video that’s coming up on my YouTube feed is saying that America is headed for a recession if not already in one. No one thinks the US is winning. Other than you of course…

China had previously held fire when tariffs were raised by Biden.

Another gem. Back when tariffs were good and beneficial to the nation that imposed them? This illustrates the danger of mindlessly repeating democrat narratives rather than engaging the grey matter and thinking through issues ones-self.

Ahhhh. So tariffs you judge as small are good, medium or large bad? Liberal "logic" as ever is clear as mud.

Lucky based forumers didn't stoop so low as to claim shoving a small fluoro light up your blurter was good, a big one bad. Thats the beauty of dealing in reality and being effortlessly able to point out, no, he did not tell anyone to shove anything up their blurters, neither large nor small. But tariffs....

I don't think it's incumbent upon me to give you remedial reading lessons. I was critiquing the logical proposition inherent in what you claim  that if quantity x is good, then quantity x+y is better and quantity x+y+z is better still. Now as a logical proposition, it works. But as a rational one, not so much. More isn't always better. Sometimes more makes things worse.

Last I checked, I still have two. But back on topic, seems like the consensus is that it was Trump that was stupid to put tariffs on China. You might want to request the mods to close this topic…

Which makes it even more embarrassing for china, is trump announced these tariffs way in advance. China had a lot of time to think about it if trump did it, youd think their first priority would be damage control and have the lowest tax possible on their exports but no they did exactly what trump wanted.

all trump wanted was to tax the <deleted> out of chinese goods, if china didnt do anything would trump have kept it low? We will never know

Bullies need to stood up to

sTrumf is nothing more than a bully who is using his "power" to enrich himself and his mates and he is the one who is embarrassing himself and the entire retinue of acolytes and sycophants.

It is not China being taxed through tariffs it is the American consumer who pays the price

The man is doing his job, just like every Cabinet member. You join the team and it's your job to support the President's agenda. Whether he actually believes it all is another matter. You'd be hard pressed to find any individual in government who doesn't have private beliefs that differ from their public posture.

China had previously held fire when tariffs were raised by Biden. But Trump couldn't resist pushing the envelope.. As has frequently been noted, 15% of Chinese exports are bound for the USA. And it isn't just exports that China is using as a weapon. As you may recall, it's now withholding vital rare earths from the United States. China also has the advantage of being ruled by a real dictator. No threat to Xi's agenda from midterms. Trump is still only a wannabe dictator.

15% loss of income will no hurt Xi. But it will hurt the average Chinese. Factories and production will slow. Lots of job losses. It will take many countries buying their products to meet the loss they will have from lack of sales in the US.

Anyway, eventually one of those leaders. will fold. Either Xi will come to the negotiating table. Or Trump will cease trying to make the trading field even between countries.

But I think Trump is playing a bigger field game and will not concede to China. Other countries are watching closely as well to see how Trump manages China.

And you don't think Americans are going to be hurt by Trump's tariffs? Remember, it isn't only China that will be striking back at US taiffs. And as I have pointed out repeatedly, Xi isn't facing midterm elections.

This is the Oath of Office for US attorney general:

You also seem to forget that many other countries who have unfair trade deals with the US are now willing to go to the negotiating table and strike a better deal. That means only Chinese products will be affected. Some prices will lower and some will raise and this is only speculation about rising costs. What is not speculation is that Trump has over 100 countries willing to negotiate a better trade deal. China is the only one fighting that. You can only guess how the public will perceive this.

I do know the Dem press will only show the negative side to make it all bad on Trump. Avoiding the positive from the other 100 countries that we struck a better trade deal with.
