Why do people get drunk in bars?

I would rather get drunk in a bar than in a library, gym, supermarket, bus station, public transport, laundry, children's hospital etc.

Well, I guess all the places you listed don't sell alcohol?

What message?  If you annoy Thai people they will gang up on you then beat the crap out of you?

Yeah, in case you didn't realise, people who have no intention of getting pissed up and being annoying, still don't want to go somewhere where the people batter people who do.

This threat might make you feel good, but it's really not great for tourism.

Expand

If you lay hands on Thais or other tourists, security will beat the crap out of you.

This and all other incidents like this seem to have no effect on tourism.

I was there two weeks ago and will be there again two days. Love the atmosphere. Driving down from Isaan for the big day on the 19th.

Do it every year.

I think the problem is that he was goading the whole crowd, so basically multiple Thai males felt like he had kind of put them down.  This meant that they all felt that they needed to each attack him in order to make themselves feel better.  It was all about fragile egos, since he was basically no threat to anyone at that point.

It's sad that people cannot rise above these childish football hooligan like behaviours.  And pretty sad that people are now celebrating it also.

Expand

Even sadder is people not taking responsibility for THEIR OWN ACTIONS.

Like the drunk getting what he asked for.

According to you it’s someone else’s fault because of his beat down.

You sound exactly like an American Democrat.

Good on the bouncers for decking him..

Pattaya, and most of Thailand is slowly turning into a dogs breakfast ... Maguluf, Benidorm.... awful to see.

This idiot would have not have behaved this way in Dubai, or Singapore. He feels embolded to do this in Thailand.

Do we have a nationality yet ?

Well said. It's the Amsterdam/Las Vegas/Cancun effect. I wasn't trying to suggest that cannabis makes people more aggressive, but I am saying that when cannabis becomes part of the allure of coming to Thailand, it starts attracting people who have less respect for the culture, and who see Thailand merely as a party destination where anything goes.

Expand

This. It's attracting an awful crowd.

The bouncers finished the disturbance.

Very effectively.

They all work for NightWish Group down there which is headed by an Englishman.

Expand

No they do not ALL work for the Nightwish group. I believe they employ their own, then there is another outfit of security people other bars employ. It was supposed to be looked at after the last incidence of drunken aggressive Brits getting kicked in the head on the Six. That past incident was proven to be nothing to do with Nightwish security.

Anyhow, comes with the territory, the security get a salary and a bonus of an idiot falang to kick on a weekly basis!

I doubt that, any potential quality tourists who reads about people getting drunk in bars will reroute their holiday. The abject drunks will keep coming and the Thais seem content with the job of beating the excrement out of whiteys.

You were wrong about what happened where the American killed the guy for lifting up a Thai girl by her neck, and I was right.

Why would you need to see me defusing a potentially violent situation in order to believe that it can be done?  Anyone can do it.

You're reaching now because you've failed so badly.

He means with a foreigner.  When Thai people do it, it's ok and normal.  When foreign people do it, it shows how bad foreign people are.  (That's just how some people view this place.  Thai = good, foreigner = bad.)

In 20 years of living in Thailand, including lots of time in Bangkok and Pattaya, no Thai has ever provoked or threatened me. In saying that lots of them have tried to jump queues in front of me, both male and female and I approached them in a normal way, told them and pointed to the back of the queue, and every time bar none they have done so.

Apart from their road behaviour, I have found the average Thai to be decent, honest and non confrontational.

So you've never seen a video online or read a news story where a Thai was aggressive and confrontational?

I am referring to personal experience, you will get aggressive and confrontational people in any country. I do not and never have  drunk alcohol and have always just minded my own business, though as I pointed out in a previous post, I will never allow queue jumping in front of me.

So, how do you think your personal experience is relevant when talking about Thailand or Thai people as a whole?

You seem to be disagreeing with what is being discussed, but your example does not support any kind of disagreement, since you personally not experiencing something does not mean it doesn't happen.

A place like Soi 6 will suffer no consequences from a clown getting curb stomped. If you're not a clown you have nothing to worry about. If you have concerns - you just might be that clown.

You don't need to be sad, just word your answer in a way that makes the point you are making clearer.  And think about what the original post was that you are replying to.

I was talking about people perceiving Thai people being violent as not being an issue, but foreign people being violent something very bad, not whether or not Thai people are ever violent, so your personal experiences don't really apply.

E.g. "Thai people may be drunk, violent, aggressive, etc., sometimes, but personally I have never had a problem with any Thai person.  Even when they jump the queue in front of me, I tell them to get to the back of the line, and they do so." - This still doesn't really apply to what I wrote, as that was a matter of perception, but it makes it a little more relevant.  I would certainly agree that Thai people are less likely to be confrontational than a Westerner.

It makes Thailand and Thai people look bad.  Not just the street that it happened on.  People won't even remember exactly where it took place.

Do you think so?  I think it makes tourists look bad, rather than any Thai people.
