Popular Post Georgealbert Posted April 16 Popular Post Posted April 16 Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Thai social media influencer “Uncle Tony” is facing backlash and possible legal action after posting a promotional video for his restaurant, in which he appeared wearing traditional Arab attire while preparing and encouraging the consumption of roasted pork, a dish prohibited in Islam. The video, originally shared on the influencer’s popular Facebook page “Uncle Tony’s Kitchen,” quickly drew heavy criticism from the public, particularly from the Muslim community, for its perceived insensitivity. The post featured Uncle Tony dressed in a thobe (a long robe commonly worn by Arab men) as he prepared the dish and invited viewers to try it at his restaurant. The situation escalated when the official Facebook page of the Islamic Committee Office of Phetchabun Province announced that it had received numerous complaints about the video. The committee confirmed it is currently gathering evidence to file a formal complaint against the influencer for actions deemed offensive and disrespectful to Islamic beliefs. In a public statement, the committee said: “We would like to inform our Muslim brothers and sisters who have expressed concern. The Islamic Committee Office of Phetchabun has been made aware of the situation involving the Facebook page ‘Uncle Tony’s Kitchen.’ We are in the process of collecting evidence to pursue legal action in accordance with the law.” Uncle Tony has since removed the video and issued a public apology, acknowledging the sensitivity of the issue and expressing regret for any offence caused. However, the Islamic committee appears determined to proceed with legal measures, insisting the matter is too serious to be resolved with an apology alone. The case highlights the importance of cultural and religious sensitivity in online content, especially in a diverse society where such issues can provoke strong emotional responses. Legal experts suggest that Uncle Tony could face charges under Thai laws related to public offence or religious defamation, depending on the outcome of the investigation. The story continues to unfold as authorities assess the legal implications and the influencer’s intent behind the controversial content. -- 2025-04-17 1 2 20

Expand Seems like the Islamic Committee can´t accept Thailand. Here a Wai, apology and 500-2000 baht is ok even for a kick in the head that hospitalize the victim. They need to accept the rules where they settle down like everybody else. Besides that, good on Uncle Tony for issuing an apology and trying to sort out the matter. However, he is talking to a group that will never understand, as they think they can set their own rules in every country they settle in. Popular Post Gsxrnz Posted April 17 Popular Post Posted April 17 Cultural appropriation is a ridiculous social construct. I don't see too many Arabs wearing Saville Row suits being dressed down for cultural appropriation. Maybe Uncle Tony was culturally appropriating the dress, mannerisms, and food tastes of a Christian Arab, nothing to do with Islam. 6 23 4 2

Popular Post Patong2021 Posted April 17 Popular Post Posted April 17 An arab is not exclusively muslim. There are Arab, Christians, Jews, Druze and some others. Wearing a style of clothing does not make someone a muslim. If that was the case, the pronoun people who wear Keffiyeh as a political statement when they are vandalizing universities should be condemned too. Israel is the largest pork producer in the middle east followed by Lebanon and Bahrain. Turkey is a major supplier of pork products in the region. The UAE has the largest consumption of Pork. So, the self appointed guardians of propriety in Thailand can go get stuffed. 4 19 3 3

Popular Post loong Posted April 17 Popular Post Posted April 17 Since when has that style of clothing been Islamic? Are Arabs wearing suits insulting to western Christian culture because some Christians wear suits? I see many in the west wearing western clothing promoting Islamic ideals. It doesn't occur to me to be offended by what they wear although I may not agree with their religion. 2 4

Popular Post Photoguy21 Posted April 17 Popular Post Posted April 17 The costume seen in the photo is because of the heat in the Middle East. It keeps you cool and protects your head from the sun. It is purely practical nothing else. 3

Travel Dude Posted April 17 Posted April 17 That was not a smart move by Uncle Tony. And definitely not respectful to the Muslim community. Hope it's just an honest mistake without thinking 🤔 Although everyone knows Muslim do not eat pork. He apologised. If it was sincere then the Muslim community should forgive him. Peace and respect to all from all religions! 1
BusyB Posted April 17 Posted April 17 There are also Christian Arabs who presumably eat pork? (When they can get it that is, like on holiday in LOS.) I remember reading about serious tensions between Islamic locals and Christians who run (ran?) pig farms in Cairo poor districts. They weren't very popular people.
