Krabi Earthquake May Have Triggered Sinkhole

A shock discovery in Krabi's Khao Phanom district as a sinkhole and a vast fissure came to light on Saturday, raising concerns among locals. Measuring a colossal 20 by 20 metres, the sinkhole emerged behind the Theppitak chicken farm, causing notable ground instability.

Cracks appeared in the farm's floor, with a subsiding beam, pointing to potential seismic activity as the cause.

Village headman, Thanapol Rampoey, acted swiftly, cordoning off the danger zone to keep locals safe. Suwit, the 52-year-old owner of the farm, stated he was alerted by villagers to the growing hole, which eventually swallowed two towering oil palm trees.

The once minor gash in the earth has expanded significantly, leaving Suwit and his neighbours understandably alarmed.

Authorities are on high alert, with inspections anticipated today (April 20) to assess the situation further. Suspicions link this geological occurrence to a 3.5-magnitude earthquake that rattled Krabi’s Nuea Khlong district just days before, on Monday at 2.27 pm, confirmed by the Meteorological Department.

The quake's epicentre lay two kilometres deep, and it shockingly shook its way across Nuea Khlong and Mueang districts.

The department attributed the earthquake's wrath to the Khlong Marui Fault, a trembling line stretching 148 kilometres, and slicing through the terrain beneath Ban Ta Khun and Phanom districts in Surat Thani, alongside Thap Put and Mueang districts in Phang Nga.

It dramatically extends into the Andaman Sea, touching Phuket and Koh Yao Island. This geological fault now stands under scrutiny as locals await further expert evaluation.
