Pattaya ha always been a draw

Only by the deluded. It's a resort built on prostitution.Take that element away and it could become an attractive resort town for Bangkok residents and some foreign tourists. It could also shake off its low class image since its entire British expatriate population speak like Dan about Thailand.

You must not live in Pattaya.  It already is 'an attractive resort town for Bangkok residents and some foreign tourists.'  And, I would add, lots of year-round expats living here.  Including me.  Pattaya is filled with Bangkokians on weekends and long holidays.   If you lived here you would know it is very easy to avoid the adult entertainment areas.  You would also know that a very large percentage of the new development is being built away from those areas.   T21 and Centre Point Space just two examples of many--as far from Walking Street as you can get and still be near Pattaya Beach.  The newest, big water park is on the Darkside.  The newest go-cart attraction is in Jomtien.

The first huge highrise projects built by the large Bangkok developers who came to Pattaya were originally built as weekend getaway condos for Bangkokians and other Thais.  I'm referring to Lumpini Park Beach Jomtien and the two projects in Wongamat and Naklua by Lumpini, The Base and Baan Plai Haad by Sansiri, Centric Sea by SC Asset, and Unixx by Raimon Land.  The Base's sales brochure was titled "It's the Weekend" and featured yuppy Bangkokians frolicking--with not a single farang pictured in the whole brochure.   Fun fact:  Sansiri actually built a sales office for The Base in Pattaya but they needn't have bothered.  By the time the sales office opened The Base was mostly booked already--by Bangkokians who had booked in Bangkok.

Sort of.

The adult entertainment is not hidden. It's deliberately in your face because it's what keeps the coffers filled. It's a huge chunk of the GDP.

No one if forcing you into the bars, but they are all near the beach.

So if you take your kids to the beach, they will see half naked women across the street.

I guess the Thais don't think much about it and it's become normalized?

I don't consider Pattaya beach as suitable for children, sand too dirty, water too dirty.

I don't believe kids really pay attention to stuff they don't understand.

Sex, drugs, alcohol, mental illness almost invisible to most of them

Adults that want something banned always use 'but the children' as an excuse to promote their agenda.

There was a young boy in a gogo bar once.

He put his hands on his eyes as he walked by the stage. It was funny.

The Thais are pragmatic. They understand this industry brings in cash.

And I'm not saying it needs to be banned because of the kids.

But neither can you avoid coming into contact with the adult scene as the previous poster suggested.

Yes, I agree the sex industry permeates the whole town.

And you would need to walk around with your hands over your eyes not to see it.

Pattaya has more than just one beach.   The huge Centara Resort, geared to families, is on Wongamat Beach--about as far from Walking Street as you can get.   Ditto for the enormous Centre Point 3 Resort now under construction.  Many of the large, new condo developments, such as Copacabana and three of the Riviera brand mega projects, are on Jomtien Beach.  There's also Cosy Beach, and Dongtan Beach, with the Jomtien Park water park.   Just as an aside, my Bangkok relatives have visited many times and they have never actually sat on any of the Pattaya beaches--although we have hired boats a number of times and gone snorkeling.

Oh don't be a selfish man and expect others to do it for you ! !!!

Reminds when I was waiting at the bus stop recently to go to work here in Australia when 2 young ladies  walking past approached me to tell me a homeless man was slumped over nearby on a park bench and he wasn't responding

"Can you call an ambulance? They asked

No I can't!  ,  I responded

"You selfish girls ...do it yourself!

Well, the Hotel I am at in Jomtien is full with Thai families and the pools are full with children. Maybe you should come down and tell them. I would pay you a beverage of your choice, because then it would be much quieter daytime.

No different than the young locals here,

Very different Fred.

How much graffiti do you see in Thailand compared to your country?

How much vandalism of public property for fun?

You really have no clue.

Yes up that way is more geared to the German sex tourists. A different vibe altogether

Get off the I don't have any clue. You obviously aren't aware of what really goes on either here or in the US, and make assumptions every day, which are always wrong. Maybe take some time and actually see what's outside.

Teens are the same everywhere. I actually raised 4, so far, so I do understand teens very well. That there isn't any graffiti doesn't take away from the fact there are thousands of teen boys, fatherless, who treat girls miserably, use guns, knives, machetes and sticks to hurt and kill, steal anything not nailed down, and do all the other same crap teens do everywhere on earth. The fact there are so many running amok here has a lot to do with 1/3 of them raised by grandparents while their "parents" are elsewhere, a figure higher than anywhere on earth.

I see graffiti here also, especially in big cities, and a lot is encouraged, just like large cities in the US, which you know little about besides the Jerry Springer show. You can't make any judgements on a country you've never lived in.  I can. I see vandalism here and back home, most of it done by teens, and gangs, which are in the US and here also. I'm thinking you haven't any children, teens especially, so only go by what others have told you with no personal experience. But keep assuming, as it shows just how little you do know.

I guess it is.... when I was 18-20 the idea of a 12000 mile round trip holiday to the Far East was well beyond my financial means.....

True, but that was before the airlines were deregulated and they all colluded to keep prices high.  (At least in the USA).

I remember when I could walk up to a Delta counter with a United ticket and hop on the next Delta flight, with no penalty.  Today, that would be unheard of.  In return, we can fly to Thailand for less than it used to cost to fly between states.

Seems you are confined by the boundaries of North Pattaya road, Sukhumvit and South Pattaya road, dare to venture out of that area and Pattaya is a very attractive destination, probably more tourist attractions than most of Thailand together, Huge ammount of golf courses around, International schools, international foods, multi-million dollar houses and condos, but you need to break through your boundaries to understand the real Pattaya.

I was just looking at videos on Facebook

One Facebook full page is a Thai one showing young farangs videos of them out of control in Pattaya and I think  Phuket

One video I was shocked at ,two young teenage farangs probably 18-20 with UK accents with beards, bashing a Thai man in the street near Pattaya Big C, before a group of Thai men come to his aid

They are chased into a 711

The police turn up and do not take control of the situation!

Another video showing young farangs probably around the 18-20yo mark sitting on the bonnet of a car being driven fast down the south Pattaya road

Another video showing 5 farangs attacking a bouncer at a go go bar

Please is this new ?

What is new is these situations being filmed but drunken brawls have been going on since the 60s but they weren't fimed and then distributed for us all to see.

You've had children, so should understand just how aware they are on what goes on around them. They look to adults for guidance and what they see going on gives them an idea how the world is, especially until their parents explain things to them, as there's a lot of liars and fake news they'll hear daily.

Kids see adults drinking or doing drugs, they think it's normal, no matter how much you explain to them it's only for older people. They emulate us in every way, including our habits. If they see sex going on between their parents, especially when young, they're curious and want to know all about it. They also see people acting strange, aka mental illnesses, and wonder why.

My ex wife's family has a few that are unstable, and she stays at grandma's house half the time, so tells me what goes on there, and then I have to explain that her mom, grandma, uncle, cousin and aunt all have mental issues. This at 8 years old, because she wants to understand why they do things she sees as strange, and they are. You can't hide things for long with children. Toddlers maybe, but you'd be surprised just how much a child absorbs from age 1-5, which is the time they learn almost everything about people.

Well you would know about that.

It is best for children to grow up in a home with both parents.

Sadly these days many parents are selfish and only think of themselves and a lot of kids end up with an endless stream of step fathers and mothers.

Speak for yourself Fred.

I learned a lot about people after the age of 5.

I suppose some people are stuck with the brain of a 5 year old.

I wouldn't class Thai people as any examples of sanity/insanity for our western standards. Trying to relate their behaviour to our cultural standards just doesn't work.

Not to mention, someone living their own life in accordance to the instructions of the fairies that live at the end of their garden probably shouldn't be proclaiming on the status of anyone else's mental health.

Yep, I really like the Darkside bars and gentlemen clubs. Much seedier over that side.
