Amazed you were granted a DTV in the first place.

Why? If you have the right documents and are working remotely, why would you be surprised? Are you suprised about everyone else getting a DTV as well?

Well, you certainly didn't have the correct documents to satisfy Immigration.
Obtaining the visa from a Thai Embassy is a different matter.

Went to Jomtien Immigration to extend my DTV. Had all the documents that was required based on the sheet of listed documents the front ladies gave me a month ago. Front desk ladies checked my documents. All was ok. She said that she would take me to the Desk 1 where they will check it again, but sometimes they require more documents and doing a border bounce is better. Went to Desk 1, they checked the documents. They weren't happy with the documents submitted. Wanted to have a company stamp on my work contract & position profile, even though there's no such thing for my company. They said it's needed. They also asked where is the office of my company. Since the company is based from home with no office, and also no international offices, an extension can't be done. Also they asked for the website of my company, which there is none. Seems you must work for an international company with many international locations and have a website to get an extension. They said I should border bounce as most applicants can't get extensions. What a waste of time.

What proof of a company and employment did you show when you got the initial DTV ?

Wouldn't the criteria be the same to get an extention ?

Not necessarily.

The criteria to obtain a visa from a Thai Embassy, and the criteria to extend your permission of stay from that visa at Immigration, can differ.
I could give examples, but would be going off-topic.

No, it was discussed on an earlier thread that the documents needed to get a DTV in-country extension are stricter than for the initial visa at an embassy.

Also as this post shows, the goalposts are moving. This is probably as they don't want to do it as they are scared of getting in trouble with regional or national higher-ups so when unsure they simply create more conditions and requirements (i.e. obstacles) to extension.

As many including myself have previously posted, why put yourself through this ordeal when you can simply do a border bounce? It is a multiple entry visa.

Also, you do not need to be employed to successfully obtain a DTV. You can be self-employed with a "professional portfolio". So, it is clear to me that Jomtien Immigration are simply avoiding what they see as a potential problem. They even advised the OP to do a border bounce. Sometimes you need to listen to their 'hints'.

The OP obtained his DTV via e-Visa platform.

The extension is handled  by Thai immigration.

Different mobs.

The in person chat I had with a young UK guy who just obtained his DTV as digital nomad had to provide the items listed as required by immigration office.

He indeed had an employer in UK and was able to satisfy the requirements.

The perfect illustration of what is already obvious: Thailand has no mean to check any foreign documentation you provide. Screening officials will randomly accept, at their discretion, any photoshopped docs and reject genuine ones. Ludicrous.

Employment contract.

No, the criteria isn't the same for an extension. Gave them the same employment contract, but they want it with a stamp. Also, they require a position profile and that they also want stamped. And other documentation as additional requirement too.

Good luck with him getting an extension. 99% of people are required to do border bounces, by the looks of things and the chats with immigration.

When DVT was first hit the shelves the 180 day extensions were discussed.

The consensus seemed to be a border run or flight abroad to avoid applying at immigration would be good/best option.

Let's face it the requirements for DTV are minor compared to say extensions from a Non O eg retirement.

DTV is a multi entry visa and sweetest deal ever provided.

Do a land border run for 5700 or a mini holiday to Saigon.

You have it easy.

Is that the goalposts moving, or just the local office wanting to see confirmation that you're actually doing what you said you'd do when you applied for the DTV in the first place?

Not that much different from me getting my WP the first year, but then requiring proof that I paid taxes during the year in order to renew.

But that's an academic question when it's so cheap and easy to hop out and back in.

On an aside, is self employment allowed for the DTV, or do you have to work for a company registered somewhere?

Goalposts moving. The requirements for extension of DTV permission to stay were published a couple of months ago. Jomtien appear to need more.

You may be more right than you realise. Jomtien seem to be using some of the Non-Imm B / WP regulations as a guide.

Self-employment is definitely permitted. Here is the requirement "Employment contract or employment certificate in their country or professional portfolio showcasing digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent or freelancer status" In fact there was a poster last week who seemed to get a DTV based on managing his own investments!

I always knew that is better to avoid extending DTV at immigration office. The best thing is to do a border bounce or just fly to another asian country and then come back. Easy easy! No stress

It seems to me that the OP get a visa on false pretenses. His company don't excist at all.Its a way for the OP to get a visa for a longer stay.

Just exit the country and then come back again. Many foreigners are paying visa agencies just to get a DTV to stay long term
