A lightning strike has claimed the life of a local farmer in the northeastern province of Sakon Nakhon while he was herding his cattle. The incident occurred around 12:30 on 7 May, in Ban Nadi, Na Hua Bo Subdistrict, Phanna Nikhom District.

Emergency services from Na Hua Bo Subdistrict Municipality and Phanna rescue teams, along with officers from Phanna Nikhom Police Station, rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a fatal lightning strike.

The deceased, identified by relatives as Mr Paek 54, was found already moved to a safe location by family members before authorities arrived. He was the owner of the property where the incident occurred.

According to reports, the weather at the time was hot and humid, with heavy cloud cover and continuous thunder. Mr Paek had gone out to herd his cattle into the pen from an open field. As he passed by a tall coconut tree in his garden, lightning struck the top of the tree. Mr Paek was in close proximity and was hit by the electrical surge from the strike, resulting in his immediate death.

Authorities have transported the body to Phanna Nikhom Hospital for a formal autopsy.

Officials have issued a renewed warning to the public in light of this tragic event. The Meteorological Department of Thailand has forecast thunderstorms and strong winds throughout May and advises citizens to avoid standing under large trees, near unstable structures or in open fields during storms, to ensure personal safety and protect property.
