Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has teamed up with Google to launch an innovative project using artificial intelligence (AI) to manage traffic lights more efficiently across the city, aiming to ease congestion and reduce harmful PM2.5 air pollution.

 

The initiative, known as Project Green Light, began in February 2025 and has already been implemented at over 50 key junctions throughout Bangkok. By harnessing Big Data and real-time AI analysis of driving behaviour, the system optimises traffic signal timings to better suit varying traffic conditions throughout the day.

 

According to Mr. Ekwaranyu Amrapal, BMA spokesperson, the intelligent traffic management has reduced vehicle stops by up to 30%, minimising stop-and-go congestion and improving overall traffic flow. This smoother movement is also expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 10%, contributing to cleaner air in the capital.

 

The BMA is also utilising Probe Data gathered from GPS tracking on mobile devices to analyse travel origins and destinations. This data helps refine traffic signal patterns and lane management, particularly at major intersections such as Ratchathewi, Rama IX, and Taksin Bridge, where trials have already begun.

 

“We are committed to leveraging technology seriously to enhance daily commuting for residents,” said Mr. Ekwaranyu. “By integrating Big Data and AI, we tailor traffic signals to reflect real traffic conditions. Should any area still experience issues, we encourage the public to report them via the Traffy Fondue app, so we can address problems directly.”

 

This collaboration marks a significant step towards smart city initiatives, balancing urban mobility and environmental concerns for a healthier Bangkok.
