Is this how mobile banking works here? You put in the amount manually?

With small stores and coffee shops, some Lazada delivery riders, bars and restaurants.

The QR codes pay direct to their personal bank accounts.

And that's what happens when Europeans or South Americans learn the importance of a decimal point, viz a viz a comma when separating whole numbers.  :coffee1:

a decimal point is a bit different than a comma,

Some countries, Netherlands for example, use a comma as a decimal separator and a point as a thousands separator.  However I suspect in this case the cyclist used neither.

Not if you scan a QR code.

So the cyclist has not noticed that he paid over $670 for two coffees? Most people would have noticed quickly.

I get a notification every time a transaction goes from my bank, QR code, debit card or ATM withdrawal.

So what if the merchant enters the wrong amount? Would you be able to see it?

Yes, and you get two chances to notice and abandon the transaction.

The bigger places have the QR generator connected directly to the POS terminal so it's all automagic.

Tour de France...?

Surely they have his transaction details and the bank can just refund the digital deduction at a press of a button.

The merchant won't have the full account details so it would take a little effort going to their bank to correct it.  But of course they have already said they are worried about verification  and security hence they prefer to wait for the tourists to come back in person😅

221.50 for 2 coffees? Huh?🙃🙃

Yes.

It wasn't the village shop - or Amazon.

I suspect that they had more than coffee because nobody prices a cup of coffee ay 110.75 Baht.

Cashless. Safe , secure and convenient.

That cash stuff....dirty , dangerous and a hassle ( even though we've been using it for hundreds of years without any trouble.

Really , for such small amounts , why not just carry a little of the old stuff.

Because when out cycling you carry as little as possible.

Mobile phone is needed for mapping, so might as well use it as your wallet.

Would you really want me to pay you with a wet sweaty 100bht note I pulled out of my cycling shorts?

There are good people around. Plenty of merit earned too.

Most people are indeed good.

But they are not in positions of power or influence, so nothing ever changes.

Clown world and evil persist because it's baked into the system.

Have a great day!

Exactly, no pockets in lycra shorts.

Yes and no..

With 'some' transactions you scan a 'Static' QR Code - then input the amount (usually smaller vendors, street stalls, and shops that want to reuse the same QR code.etc)

With 'other' transactions you Scan a 'Dynamic' QR Code - and the amount is automatic (usually used in supermarkets, chain stores, or e-commerce platforms etc)

Exactly that...      These days my wallet is tiny and sticks to the back of my phone.

It contains, ID & Credit Card...   and 1000 baht in 'emergency cash'...  no real need to carry a wallet anymore.

(Driving license stays in the car / Bike license stays with the bike).

As for the question: "Why not just carry the old stuff" - thats part of a long running debate on this forum concerning cash-vs-cashless...  with every positive, there is also a negative with either option...

This is an example of where cash-less goes wrong...    Carrying 10,000 baht around and loosing your wallet would be an example of 'carrying cash' going wrong - each have their pro's and cons.

More than Amazon, less than Starbucks...

It's 'Amazing Thailand' coffee so cost a wee bit more. Glad the shop wasn't ripping off people.

The cost of the espresso machine's alone in some of these shops is astronomical...   And if they are using decent beans..  then 100 baht for a coffee doesn't seem excessive at all...

I think some guys 'read coffee' and think 3in1 or Instant, when in reality these days there are a lot of folk who can tell the difference between a cheap and ropey poor quality robusta and a high quality arabica.

Also - have you seen the bikes some of these folk are riding around on - Go to the Skylane in Bangkok and look for a bike worth less than 100,000 baht !!!
