Crime Man Dies After Swallowing 49 Meth Pills to Evade Police in Nakhon Pathom
Picture courtesy of Amarin A 28-year-old man has died after reportedly swallowing 49 methamphetamine pills during a police stop in Nakhon Pathom in an apparent attempt to conceal the drugs. The man began convulsing in a police holding cell and later died in hospital, prompting his family to seek justice. The deceased, Mr Theeranai Chumpan, had been driving to work in the early hours of 2 June when he encountered a police checkpoint operated by Mueang Nakhon Pathom Police. According to his wife, Ms Natthawadee, Mr Theeranai panicked, swallowed a packet of methamphetamine tablets and attempted to flee. He was quickly apprehended by officers, who managed to retrieve only the empty plastic drug packet from his throat. Police then escorted Mr Theeranai to Nakhon Pathom Hospital for a drug test. He reportedly told medical staff that he had swallowed only two pills and was returned to the police station for observation. According to Ms Natthawadee, she visited her husband at the station around 08:00. Initially, he appeared stable, but later he began convulsing violently in his cell, grabbing onto the iron bars before collapsing. She immediately alerted police officers and investigators, who called for assistance and carried him downstairs. Blood was seen coming from his mouth and nose as he was laid near the police vehicle. He was transported to Nakhon Pathom Hospital with CPR administered en route. Despite efforts to save him, Mr Theeranai was pronounced dead at 15:40. The family alleges that officers failed to take the situation seriously and delayed medical assistance. Ms Natthawadee claims an officer told her that unless her husband was foaming at the mouth, they would not take him to hospital. Police Colonel Achirawat Thaworncharoenwat, Superintendent of Mueang Nakhon Pathom Police Station, confirmed that a fellow detainee told officers that Mr Theeranai admitted to swallowing 49 meth pills. He said a formal investigation committee will be established to look into the incident and promised full cooperation with the family. The case has raised serious concerns over police conduct, detainee safety and emergency response protocols in custody. Adapted by Asean Now from Amarin 2025-06-04 -

Yes, agree, it happens in the west. I'm sure we would see the occasional sad story in Thailand even if the government gave support but would be far fewer -

Politics Anutin Out, Prasert In: Cabinet Revamp Shifts Interior Power
I suspect its a power play to be able to lean on the officials at the local level to "create" support with the populace in future elections.
