Tragedy in Gaza: Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar succumbs to his injuries after losing nine children

Featured Replies

Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, a 40-year-old Palestinian doctor, died Saturday from injuries sustained in an Israeli airstrike that killed nine of his ten children on May 23 in Khan Younis. The practitioner, who ran a private medical center with his wife Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, had been seriously injured to the brain, lungs and internal organs. Only his wife and their 11-year-old son Adam, still hospitalized, survive this family tragedy that illustrates the human cost of the conflict in Gaza.

A doctor helping others, has 9 of his own children murdered. If there is a God, let there be justice for the Palestinian people.

Could be God giving justice for the Jewish people ?

Consequences  for Muslims murdering Jews ?

You  offer your feigned indignation  based upon a claim circulated by Hamas.

Who was he helping? Hamas personnel? What were the circumstances of the  alleged Israeli bombing? Was the family situated at a  military facility  occupied or used by Islamic Jihad and others? Alleged bombing because a large number of  Gaza's injuries ocur when missiles or rockets misfire, or when ammunition storage areas detonate.

Not many facts were provided in the story, but it serves as an excuse to demonstrate support for the cause of Hamas n'est ce pas?

Nothing to do with Hamas.

It may surprise you that there are hundreds of thousands of women and children, and no doubt many men too, who have nothing to do with Hamas yet they have been subject to continuous bombing and now a food blockade by Israel for two months which has led to malnutrition and starvation.

The UN needs to go in to police Gaza. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation can only offer a trickle of food in the deep south (an attempt perhaps to corral all the Palestinians towards the Egyptian border), the old, young, infirm, pregnant women cannot possibly walk the many miles they have to go to get to the GHF distribution points.

No surprise that the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross said Gaza has become worse than hell on earth.

That's like saying the Russians have nothing to do with what's going on in Ukraine.

It’s all over the news. Are you seriously saying you believe it to be lies?
Israel don’t allow journalists into Gaza as they are hiding these atrocities, unsuccessfully. Even two former Israeli prime ministers say Israel are committing war crimes.

Yes, it is reported, but not the actual circumstances. Very few if any media outlets are providing context or full detail. The event  is presented as an a random bombing of a house, which it was not.   Was there not an ongoing firefight with the IDF at the time of the  explosion, and in an area that the IDf  had declared a combat evacuation zone? And was the area not  struck,  a location from which firing of weapons against the IDF observed? The airstrike was called in to  neutralize the hostile fire.  The dead are the unfortunate result of a Hamas or other combatant fire fight with the IDF. Perhaps Hamas should not hide in residential buildings and should not bring large amounts of ammunition with them when they do.

Malnutrition and starvation? The people  looting the trucks certainly have tremendous pep and strength to do that. Why is it in all of the  videos coming out of Gaza we do not see  emaciated and starving people? How is it that there are still very fat women abkle to cry and  wail as soon as the cameras are on? If you want to see what starvation and malnutrition is, please look at the images from the Darfur where hundreds of thousands of black africans have been suffering at the hand of muslim militias.

Sudan is indeed a tragedy with the UAE supporting northern Sudanese Arabs in their oppression and killing of southern black Africans. The UAE wants food that Sudan can supply.

But this thread is about Gaza. I recommend you start a thread about Sudan but sadly not many posters will reply. Indeed one poster replied ' Who gives a fart about Sudan?' when I mentioned the cuts in USAID would lead to deaths in Africa.

His wife is Dr Alaa al-Najjar, a respected paediatrician at the Nasser medical complex.

She had gone to work to care for injured babies at the hospital when an Israeli strike destroyed her home, leaving one son and her husband initially as survivors.

It seems both were committed health workers, presumably taking turns to look after the children.

Lovely propaganda. Would you have written that she was a miserable person who mistreated patients if she had? Everyone is a hero and a saint  according to you. It is fantastic that she went to work at the Nasser medical complex. According to the WHO and Hamas health authority, as of February 2024,  the hospital could no longer serve its patients, and was no longer functional. It in effect meant that the  facility closed down. What did not close down was its use as a Hamas meeting and command point. Down in its basement, were secured spaces for Hamas use. Please do not deny this as Hamas set up its command and control centers in the basements of hospitals and this was shown when Israel  took control of several facilities and searched the basements. The documentation has been shared with the world.

You are also ignoring the fact that the location that was hit was involved in a fire fight with the IDF. The IDF was returning fire.

No one is denying that this is a sad and regrettable event. However, all your kind words are empty because they ignore the fact the dwelling was located in a declared combat zone and was to be evacuated. The dead man knew that there was a risk of combat and made the choice to  use the  dwelling.

Well you wouldn't would you, you're not in Gaza where there are plenty of doctors who are also in Hamas, here's a couple.

Take Kamal Adwan Hospital for instance, it's a military hospital. Meet "Hussam Abu Safiya" who claimed he is an innocent doctor delivering life saving skills to Gazans. He just happens to also hold the rank of colonel in Hamas.

But hey, while talking about Kamal Adwan hospital, how about the actual hospital director confessing if you need a little more convincing, apart from being the hospital director he is also a brigadier general in Hamas, it's all on tape!

Kamaal Aduan Hospital head Ahmad Kahlot of Jabliya in Gaza has confessed to the Shin Bet that Hamas took over his hospital as a military operations center, it was revealed on Tuesday. Kahlot told his interrogators that he joined Hamas in 2010 at the equivalent rank of a brigadier-general.

But let's get back to the tragic deaths of Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar and his family. You mentioned both he and his wife worked at Nasser Hospital. You are aware that this is where many of the hostages were also kept right? I find it very hard to believe if they were not aware of the dozens of hostages held there for weeks.

Freed hostage reveals: Dozens of hostages were held at Gaza's Nasser hospital
Sharon Aloni Cunio, who was freed together with her 3-year-old daughters in November, describes to CNN the harsh conditions hostages faced in Khan Yunis hospital

It does not end there though. The medications that the hostage families sent from Israel to the Red Cross who then handed it to Hamas were all found right there in Nasser hospital.

Relatives of hostages held by terrorists in the Gaza Strip set up a WhatsApp group on October 8 that started the process of coordinating deliveries of medications for their loved ones in the Strip, additionally supplying medicine and dialysis machines for Gazan children to be included in the shipments, Channel 12 reported Sunday.

It is still unknown whether any medication has reached the hostages. The outlet had reported Saturday that dozens of containers of medication bearing the names of Israeli hostages in Gaza that were found by Israel Defense Forces soldiers at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis had been sent as part of a private initiative by relatives of several captives that did not involve Israeli authorities.

Tough place for a condom salesman. They all seem to have so many kids.

If I were a Pa;estinian living in such a parlous State as Palestine I think I would try to keep my family a bit smaller.

Probably one of the thousands of children Israel has been maiming and killing.

The palestinians  have been sacrificing their kids for decades. Their current population is over two million people; substantially more than they started out with in the 1940s. As long  as they keep fighting the Israelis their war will never end. A doctor with 10 kids!? That's the story. That is inhumane. That is THE story. An educated woman being forced into having ten children and having to bring them up in the knowledge they will grow up to be fighters! I knew many palestinians in Kuwait-but that's a whole different story.

You presume..but I suspect you have spent little time in the Middle East, or Kuwait,  or Saudi,  or Libya,  or the Arab world in general so your presumptions are based on western social mores & values...Is it not more likely that they were palestinian fighters doing medical work on the side, especially medical work for senior hamas leaders? You take your beliefs from the Guardian etc but I do not. I read UNHERD etc.. I first raised money for the palestinians refugees in 1965 in Manchester via the Arabic department at the University of Manchester. Since those days my views have changed somewhat.

To suggest that Palestinians are “sacrificing their kids” is a very dehumanizing accusation. Children in Gaza and the West Bank are not being offered up as martyrs, they are born into a life of hardship, siege, and military occupation. When a child dies in war, they are a victim, not a strategy.

High birth rates often occur in poor, insecure regions.

If you lived in a place where your children could be killed by an airstrike, wouldn’t you want the world to listen, not blame you for giving birth?
You do know this doctor and her kids were locked in Gaza, you are being incompassionate .

Get a grip lefty, no one said they were being offered up as martyrs. But voting in and supporting a "government" that's fires rockers from your kids' schools, means you bear some responsibility.
