Is it just me, or does OP not have a clue of anything he/she/it posts, or read any links posted, and not exactly, very intelligent.

Just because it's called GPS, doesn't mean the device only uses GPS/USA's system of satellite tracking.

I wouldn't buy a phone that only used USA's GPS, as not very good.   Along with, GLONASS has been reliable and available for over a decade.   I thought it was common knowledge, especially since phones don't even advertise now what systems they use.

Someone needs to catch up to the 21st century.  Read past the headliner 😎

Actually it does, GPS is the term specific to the USA system. The combined navigation systems of the world are more commonly referred to as GNSS, and as newer technologies use it PNT is also the latest acronym. Look 'em up!

Disagree, GPS tracking uses multiple systems, without specifying, along with cell tower signals.  Or so Ms Google tells me.

... "Yes, many smartphones and other devices do utilize both GPS and GLONASS systems simultaneously for location tracking.

This is because combining both systems can offer increased accuracy and reliability, especially in challenging environments like urban areas or where clear satellite visibility is limited. " ...

Why do they also attribute the negatives to Trump.

I get a good BJ, and first thing that comes to my mind is ...

... 'Thank you President Trump' ... :cheesy:

Damn the coffee & cheescale was tasty ...

... again ... 'Thank you President Trump'

I woke up this morning for another day of living the dream...

... again ... 'Thank you President Trump'

Checked the exchange rate for this week ...

BeiDou is substandard. All modern late model gnsss systems have BeiDou capabilities though no one uses it for precision surveys and disables the feature because the data gets thrown out by the processing software due to numerous errors, at least in the US anyway. gps and glonass is more than enough, and more isn’t necessarily better especially with substandard data.

Disagree over opinion is acceptable, but facts is a bit daft IMHO.

The term that describes the combined navigation satellite systems from different countries is indeed Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) .
GNSS encompasses various national systems, including:

    • GPS (Global Positioning System): United States
    • GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System): Russia
    • Galileo: European Union
    • BeiDou: China
    • IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System): India
    • QZSS (Quasi-Zenith Satellite System): Japan

Recently and more commonly, the term has evolved to PNT (Positioning, Navigation and Timing).
PNT encompasses not only GNSS but also other positioning, navigation, and timing technologies, such as:

    • Terrestrial navigation systems
    • Cellular networks
    • Wi-Fi
    • Inertial navigation systems
    • Atomic clocks

PNT is a more comprehensive term that covers the broader range of technologies used for positioning, navigation, and timing.

People are too stupid to understand a new acronym, and would confuse the hell out of them.

Could you imagine all the questions they would have ...

... 'does the phone have GPS ?'

NO, uses PNT

... 'oh hell now, I need a phone that uses GPS'

Just imagine the OP as a customer ... :cheesy:

Trying to explain GPS doesn't go through walls very good.

'Huh'  ... OP is probably scratching his head as he reads the replies ... 'it doesn't ?' :cheesy:

I also get a kick out of the guys who think the GPS we use in our cars is the best that's available to the military.

The gnss receivers in phones, cars and recreational devices are single frequency receivers the only receive a single frequency from the satellite and are not accurate to more than a few feet. Survey receivers are duel frequency and can be accurate to a couple few millimeters, these need either a realtime radio signal from a correction base station or post process with software. Military uses multiple signals and can be used without any aid of a base station with pinpoint accuracy. In other words, the signals are locked and limited for the public’s use.

And that's just the part they let us know about.

The US GPS system that the military uses is far more superior than any other. Just try using glonass or beidou as a stand alone system without the aid of another gnss system, you’ll get lost. Though the additional systems most certainly helps in dense urban areas rural canyons for the common user.

GPS still has the strongest signals.

(accidentally cut at GPS: 3D fix and 3m resolution).

Results from a midrange Android phone.

But not lost with Galileo:

And also Beidou good enough.

Glonass falls back.

Goodby GPS is a must as it is under control of US military.

Best resolution reserved to them and rest can be degraded arbitrarily in "national interest".

Good to see that the long delayed Galileo keeps up

A thread about GNSS and the usual lame pearl clutchers have so much pent up frustration they gotta mention the clown, so that they can give their fake necklaces a good squeeze.

Pathetic, but amusing.😄

Back on topic. The introduction of the Chinese GNSS will have no effect on (the American) GPS, nor on the other systems currently in use.

I discovered recently that MOST VPNs do not cover you for GPS at all! I wrote a stinking letter of complaint to the managers of the company Express VPN and they just fobbed me off with an explanation but not a fix.

It is still GPS to most of us.
