So now in the last day, I get an app popup message from SCB saying that the bank is ENDING their waiver program for facial recognition....  And, I wish I knew more details about just what's going to mean for farang accountholders....

Seems that it will mostly only affect transfers above ฿50k - discussed recently here:

Why do you call the app "stupid ". Most people really love it and think it's great; me included.

I have an app for all.my bank accounts including my European banks.

Stupid  :

having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense.

Good for you, More Apps more trouble , I Say Why fix things if they ain't broke .

More is sometimes not better The Less things one has is a prevention for possible Problems And now with this overloaded Internet and more and mofe daily Hackers One is just inviting trouble.

Keep it Simple and Safe. One doesn't need a phone for banking .

I have the Krungsri mobile app on my phone. Unused until now.

I thought I would take a look at it following the discontinuation message on their website.

Should be simple enough.

So first I would need to register.

Switch off wi-fi and use 5G

Before I can use 5G I need to register as a 5G user with my password.

Er.

I don't have one of those.

This is likely to take a little while.

Maybe I should just go to my local BAAC bank which is just down the road as opposed to Krungsri which is 19km away, and open a new account there.

The real farmer bank?

Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.

(Kasikorn: Thai word for farmer 😁)

I am sceptical how they handle foreigners.

WISE transfers to BAAC not possible.

On certain paydays you will see tents and seating setup in front of the building for the 100 or more farmers waiting  hours for their payments.

The statement isn't sent 'through' the app. It arrives, as I said, as an email attachment in just the same way as it does when requested via the website.

Sorry if my question was not clear. I go to their website and request the statements that are then sent by email. Can you request them through the app.

For SCB, you can use their app to request a monthly statement, and they send it to your email in pdf format. You select more services, and it gives you an option to request a statement.

While I usually use the banks' apps on my phone, what bothers me is not having a fallback especially while being outside of Thailand. Not easy or outright impossible (depending on the bank) to set up the app on a new phone if need be.

I think most forget about this potential big issue & the need to continue to have a web based version...You could be out of the country for quite a while & have no access to your online banking if your phone packs it in.

I am sceptical too now,

After I posted, I spoke to my wife who has an account there, her view was dubious to say the least.

By comparison... Have any U.S. banks abandoned web-based banking?

"No, no U.S. banks have abandoned web-based banking [emphasis added]

.
While some banks are focusing on their online presence and mobile banking experiences, traditional banks are not completely abandoning their websites and web-based services. In fact, many banks are enhancing their web-based platforms and integrating them with their mobile apps to provide a seamless customer experience across multiple channels.

Reasons why banks continue to offer web-based banking:
  • Customer Preferences: While mobile banking is increasingly popular, particularly among younger generations, a significant portion of consumers still prefer to use online banking via a website for certain transactions or account management tasks." [emphasis added]

Google search link:

Interesting graphic on usage trends, online banking vs mobile banking, by generation:

Online is still preferred over mobile for Baby Boomers such as myself...

I use online banking more than 90% of the time, rarely use the mobile apps pretty much only when I have to or for remote check deposits, and avoid in-person Thai bank branches except when I need to deposit or obtain cash.

Same for UK banks, it seems:

From a Google search for:

"Have any U.K. banks abandoned web-based banking?"

No, UK banks have not abandoned web-based banking
. While digital banking, especially through mobile apps, is increasingly popular in the UK, particularly among younger generations, traditional web-based banking continues to be a widely used and important service. In fact, 87% of the adult British population utilized online banking in 2023.
Here's why web-based banking persists:
  • Customer preference: A significant portion of UK adults still prefer or require web-based banking for various reasons.
  • Full functionality: For some banks, full functionality might still be available through their web platforms."

But SCB will limit daily transaction by mobile App to not more than 50.000 THB starting on 12.06.2025, as I was informed by them. If you want to transfer more, you have to request their permission. Now you need to request permission by the bank to use your own money as you want to use it.

I am a little disappointed in SCB. I can't do any online banking with them anymore. I have only a joint THB acct and USD acct, and they only allow me to see my USD acct. I have to go into bank to convert to THB acct. They will not put my joint acct on the app. I had a THB acct, but didn't need it so I closed it. Too many accts to keep track of and report to US gov't.

Me too, especially as I have a small iPhone SE which has about a 4.7 inch screen and even without the banking app on it I'm constantly pressing the wrong keys with my fat fingers!

I do all of my banking here and in New Zealand using my computer with its lovely 24 inch screen and I really don't want that to change. As I'm not likely to buy a new iPhone because I only use my phone for phone calls and SMS messages, it looks like I might have to try that Bluestack Android Emulator that someone mentioned if Bangkok Bank decides to do away with its Internet banking (hopefully not).

A question:

Is it possible to have a bank app (any app) on your smartphone but use the app on your note book screen?

Hopefully that's possible which would mean that if a bank cancels it's 'internet banking' and the customer has the bank app then the transaction could  be done on the customers notebook screen (or any monitor).

I had an account with BAAC until last year, but they upgraded their banking app and I had to re-register. That's when I found out that it would no longer accept my passport number. Sorry buddy, Thai ID only grrr!

They do not have a web based on line system so I dumped the account.

Yes, you have to question why the banks are doing this as Oz is the same as USA & UK. Maybe it has something to do with outdated software as one poster said earlier.

My other question is do companies that have large transactions, say 1 million baht, use a phone app to do their transactions. I know I would not.

Question for all you highly knowledgeable banking guys.

Does the Krungsri app only work on 5G or can it be via home Wi-Fi?

I just found the answer to my own question from Google.

"The Krungsri mobile app (Krungsri App) can use either Wi-Fi or 5G (or other mobile network connections) to connect to the internet for transactions and other features. It can function with or without an active internet connection in some cases, but the app's functionality may be limited without an active connection."

What this tells me is that the Krungsri app is internet banking by another name but taylored for smartphone users.

I think the main restriction with all the banking apps is they have to be initially setup with a phone data connection, not necessarily 5G, but not WiFi.  Once setup you can use whatever connection is convenient.

There are other questions about the Thai bank mobile apps, such as:

--Can you have their app on more than one mobile device at a time, or are you limited to only one (the one with your registered mobile phone number associated with that particular bank account)?

--Can you use the Thai bank mobile apps when traveling outside Thailand, when you may not have a local Thai data connection available?

--What's the solution to Thai mobile banking apps not have working facial recognition for non-Thai accountholders, and will they as a result be prevented from using those apps to make larger fund transfers?

Not sure about your other question but I suspect not.

But to this specific question 100% yes, i do it a lot with no issues (WiFi or non-Thai data connection).

Yes.

I found this out by finally getting just a bit of positive progress. I got my 5G password sorted  but still couldn't get recognised. However I was asked if I would like to have the app installed in my notepad. It was free so I thought great, I'll have some of that.

It is now in both mobile 'phone and notepad both of which ask me for passport and account numbers and rejected me. I think I will need to go to the Krungsri branch in Buriram and check they have my current passport number in their system.

So then, you DON'T actually have the bank's app working as yet on your two different mobile devices???

It causes a big problem for people who live abroad . I know one of my customers hasn't been to Thailand for 6 years and has to send funds via the online banking  to pay her electricity and water and maintenance payments for her Condominium.

She did have the app , but has changed her phone and you cant reinstall the app outside of Thailand

Also if you have the app already and go back to your country for a few months and change or lose your phone , you have to go to the Thai bank in person to have the app installed back on your replacement phone. So If your in your own country and want transfer funds from your Thai bank  , you wont be able to.

I don’t know about other banks, but I managed to move the Bangkok Bank app to a new phone in Australia when I got one there.
