If you found 12 million baht in a box near the trash, would you keep it?

I would keep it for donating to farangs GOFUNFMEs who find themselves in difficult circumstances in Thailand.

That's a great idea

I could start a GOFUNDME and then donate the 12 million to myself 😀

For those of you saying you wouldn't keep it, consider the circumstances where/how it was found.

In a plastic box, near the garbage room!

NOBODY misplaces 12 million in that way, unless they are not aware of the funds, possibly forgotten.

IMHO it was extremely stupid for the lady to immediately turn it in, because that is what caused the numerous news reports, and then this "lawyer" shows up claiming it.

If it never hit the news, I bet you would never have heard about anybody losing this money, or claiming it!

Silly lady, had a chance to change her life, and pis*ed it away!

BTW obviously, I would have just kept it in my room (if I lived in the condo) and waited for a month or two before starting to spend it.

IF confronted, I would use the exact same excuse the "lawyer" used, which is I thought the plastic box only had old clothes in it LOL!

Yes. Absolutely. My presumption would be that by turning it over to the police the last possibility in the world would be that it would find its way back to the it's rightful owner. However I'd be incredibly discreet about it, and not a soul would know about it, and the city that I found it in I would leave in the rear view immediately.

Finders, keepers.

SM007, you stole my post. I was going to write the same word for word. When I grew up it was "finders keepers, losers weepers". If there were CCTV cameras nearby, then it would be obvious that the owners could be found, but if not, then nothing wrong with taking the money into your own apartment to safeguard it, and if nobody came forth to claim it, then leave town and have a happy life on a beach in the Med.

Yes, I would keep it, that is until my wife sniffed it out.

Sadly it would then it would be like a movie.

Gone in 60 seconds, all you would find is new shoes, and perfume clothes  :crying:

No.   I would probably take photos and alert the media to hopefully find the rightful owner.

Think of it like guy has helper clearing some stuff out and they put out a bin you didn't know they grabbed, you

would want someone to do the right thing.

Even the Thais know this guys story is allegedly false.  Someone who supposedly workes with Anti Corruption in some form

has large amount of unexplained wealth.  Allegedly withdraws money from bank in 2020 but No proof from bank.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then its probably a duck.

Sure, but the legal position is finder's keepers where I come from. But that's what she said as well. And in the end I was kind of proud of her for being an honest person.

Took me a while though. I guess I was also annoyed she did not listen to me, but took an executive decision. Not a fan of that in a relationship.

What a poor attitude. She found it so her decision. I would listen and hear you and then ignore you!

Better to give it to an orphanage.

You lived here already a long time without financial problems.

Give something back in this country to those who are in need and looking for help

That's a good suggestion. I didn't say what I was going to do with it, I just said I wasn't going to turn it into the police, that is a very futile thing to do.

I recall that some years ago there was a similar story in Thailand with someone finding a money bag and keeping it at home. The police found the person within a day or two. The person claimed that he/she was planning to go with the bag to police later when he/she had free time.

He/She was still charged with the theft by police. So much for finders/keepers law in Thailand.

I feel sure the orphans would appreciate the gesture...if they ever got to see the generosity of the giver???!!!

My wife and I have talked about the case. If I found it, I'd tell the Police for sure or else I might be accused of theft ... BUT I don't trust the Police. In this case, the Police are clearly, in my opinion, doing their best to prove that the money isn't the lawyer's. According to the Law, after one year, without any claim filed, the law allow you to claim it as your own provided you've fully complied with the initial procedures. (ChatGPT explains the law involved.)

"Yeah guv, I found a decent looking plastic box by the bins and took it home".

"Nah, when I opened it to clean it, it was empty apart from a few spiders".

"12M in cash? Who would leave that by the bins?".

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Would keep it.

Spend it on cocaine and hookers, all over again.

While I really enjoyed the first go around, maybe not again.

I'd take many extended cycling trips, not quite around the world, but close.

You reckon the police use ChatGPT in situations like this?

Of course not. That would be dishonest. I would return the 6m I found to it's rightful owner. 😏

Sorry I haven't posted for a couple of days but I was arrested for vagrancy.

I was seen wandering up the soi looking in everyone's trash.

It could have been much worse though, if Liverpool Lou had arrested me it would have been attempted theft 😀
