Hip arthroplasty

Featured Replies

Hi Sheryl

I had hip replacement surgery last October  (BKK -Udon) -- I am still getting a degree of pain from it , and soreness after just a klm or so all the X-rays that have been taken here show nothing amiss, and they have said that they would perform it again at a reduced price, but if they can not see a fault on x-rays what are they going to alter?.  I should have gotten a 2nd opinion on this before now.

I am in Pattaya at the moment for a few days could you recommend the best specialist to x-ray and view it---BKK or where ever.

The whole thing is starting to depress me somewhat as it has change my life style---fitness etc --- I am 77

Many thanks

Certainly you should not undergo more surgery until/unless the cause of the problem is clearly identified.

I suggest you consult this doctor in Bangkok:

https://www.medparkhospital.com/en-US/doctors/prof-dr-aree-tanavalee

https://www.bumrungrad.com/en/doctors/aree-tanavalee

Same doctor, different hospitals. listed in ascending order of cost.

It might also be possible to see him at Chulalongkorn after hours clinic but as it is a government hospital, long waits and red tape so maybe not so practical for someone not living in Bangkok.

If possible bring Xray films and any (post operative) scans with you

Hi Sheryl - That is a well in demand doctor, Just a few hours 1 day a week at each place  --even at Bumrungrad  just 3 hours on a Monday, heavily  booked---can we try the 2nd best Doctor?.

Thanks for your time on this

I haven't had a hip operation, but had a difficult Total Knee Replacement (TKR) which was evidently too tight. Had the same knee operated on again where they removed and shaved 2mm of the patellar button. So 6 years later, really not too bad.

Dr said 20% of people who have TNR are not happy. He didn't say dr stuffed up, just 20% aren't happy.

I saw him again this year and he said the more ops you have, the more chance of infection and he would only operate again if I couldn't walk anymore.

So you can have another hip operation, but you would definitely want to know WHY and success rate.

I don't know your pain level etc, but a knee can take a couple of years.

Had a THR done here about 7 years ago, I think.

It was about 2 years before my hip felt 'normal' again.

It was achey, uncomfortable & a bit painful for ages.

Depends on the degree of pain you're having.

But as Sheryl says, I don't think be opened up again is a good idea.

Have you seen a physio?

Have you tried at all 3 places and found him not available at all? St Louis is ususlly jjust first come first serve.

This sort of scheduling us typical of the best doctors. It refers only to their outpatient consultation hours, not their vompleye availability (for procedures etc).

Not a good idea to select doctor based on convenience of scheduling, that usually gives poor results.
