Plastic bags: the old normal?

Yeah, right, and all Thais do the same. This thread is not just for a few Farangs

I can only control me and my world.  F the rest of the world.  They want to live in trash, that's up to them.    Way more than a Thai problem.  G20 countries export their trash to 3rd world countries.  There's the problem, compounded.

Plastic is good, well, better.  Paper is bad, the worst.   Google and enlighten yourself.  People are and always will be bad, and will always be the problem.   Not the products.

Carry on ... PEACE OUT

I keep a plastic garbage bag in the car and motorcycle in case I lose my clothing, good for poncho rain gear too.

I tried a canvas poncho but I got really wet!

Okay, I admit it. I'm a plastic bag junkie. Easy, lazy. Great for rubbish.

But I've got a lot of guilt about it. I carry a Makro heavy plastic bag wherever I go. In fact, I'm having a strap repaired at the sewing lady. But even Makro puts everything in plastic bags.

Microplastics and forever chemicals in all life, not only humans but down to the tinest creatures.

What are others doing about this?

I got my reusable foldable bags always with me (cotton made)

Irrelevant ... the plastic didn't put itself there.

Why we burn ours, and take the 'dumping is sea' option away from municipal services.

You're joking, aren't you?

You burn your plastic in your garden? Really? 😱

What do you think the municipality does with the trash; burn, landfill and or dump in sea.  I don't know of any local landfill.

We burn what little trash, mostly plastic bags, wrappers of whole foods.   We compost anything else.  Recyclables that we don't use, get sold.   That's as eco friendly as one can be.

Until there is a local trash to energy plant, we'll continue to burn our trash.  Same or better than giving to municipality.

I hate selling the recyclables, as very little is actually recycled.  That's another farce people believe 🙄

Yes, they do. But in special high temperature ovens with suitable filters.

What you do is *****.

Burning trash can cause long-term health problems. The toxic chemicals released during burning include nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and polycyclic organic matter (POMs). Burning plastic and treated wood also releases heavy metals and toxic chemicals, such as dioxin.

I really can't believe that nobody told you that.

We'll continue to burn the wee bit of trash we generate ... why ?

None planned, and we don't even have any low tech WTE plants ... hmm, wonder what they do with the trash ???

Pick one ...

... open pit burning

... landfill

... dump in sea

The ignorance on this thread is staggering.   What other silly statements next ... :cheesy:

Thailand is way ahead of it's neighbors, which in itself is really sad.  A work in progress, but not expecting any down here in the Land of Pineapples.

Paraphrased from link below photo:

... "Based on the Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Department’s database, there are currently 33 operational WtE plants in Thailand" ...

Burning plastic is toxic, thankfully none of our neighbors ever conduct neighborly plastic burning fumigations

Be happy you live here and nobody bothered you so far. In EU you would have to pay a hefty fine.

Anyway your attitude is careless and irresponsible.

"Me first" is obviously fashion in these days.

Did you ever came across "social responsibility" or only Truth Social?🥴

Lots of paper is recycled. You don't see many turtles choking on paper bags.

Reading comprehension.  I probably do exactly what the municipality will do, burn it.  I don't agree with putting non biodegradables in landfills, or worse, dump in sea.

probably because a paper bag doesn't look like jellyfish in the water, like plastic bags do.

Just use paper, it’s biodegradable and is made from a renewable resource.

I have no use of paper.  I'm not an idiot, and cutting down trees is the last thing people should do.   Farms can not regenerate trees as fast as the logging industries destroys them.

Another fallacy someone stated on this thread.  Ever try reusing a paper bag ?

Repeating your silliness, doesn't make it any truer.

Paper cost more to produce, uses more energy to produce, and due to size & weight, more energy to transport.   Along with takes up more space in landfills.   Also can not be recycled as many times.   Cons all around.   Plastic Rocks.

BYE BYE

Hello hello.

Cutting down a tree on a tree farm to make paper is no worse than chopping down a head of lettuce to chomp on a lettuce farm.

The 1 Baht charge does not seem to have diminished plastic bag usage.

I use canvass bags.....except when I forget

I find the canvas bags jolly useful for storing the plastic bags I accumulate shopping.

Joking apart(?) I try to use canvas bags whenever I can and remember. I have jolly good one which I was given free by a girl in 7/11 a few months ago - oh dear, I hope I haven't started another 7/11 chick thread!

If they don't give FREE bags I don't go there again. Even if the bird at the till is a looker. Or a 9.5 as HF puts it.

Yep, nothing so satisfying as a plastic bag fire on a cold Bangkok night! Well, tires burn longer...

Does anybody know if there are scavengers / recyclers at Thai rubbish dumps?

Likely...right...

@novacova Why would anyone buy paper bag, when most have more plastic bags than they'd ever use.   Kind of defeats the whole purpose, as not only are you trashing your extra bags, you buying paper bags to throw away.

Hey, I found a paper bag in the house.   Probably a take away from nice restaurant the other day.   Useful for holding plastic bottles :cheesy:

We used to have a landfill site in our Amphur which you could take stuff to yourself. Always a few there with pointed sticks picking over the rubbish.

They started locking it up when the Amphur started a rubbish collection service ( for which you pay).

Doesn't last very long.  About 3 months of trash, mostly plastic bags & plastic packaging goes up, then out within minutes.

As stated earlier, most everything goes to the compost pile or sold.  Couple coffees & pastry, maybe, for our trouble.  Just hope part of the sold crap actually gets recycled.  50% would be a nice number, though doubtful.

Have no idea why anyone would buy a paper bag, that’s really none of my business just it’s really none of my business why anyone prefers a plastic bag, unless of course they start filling the neighborhood with plastic bag burning smoke, which certainly wouldn’t blow well with the local community here.

So you do use paper bags after all, perhaps you’re a closet paper bag user? Your secret is safe with me, promise not to tell anyone.

Didn't even know we had it, and as stated ... "Probably a take away", from restaurant, as they seem to like putting pastry in paper containers & bags.   Stupid actually, since absorb moisture.

Would never buy, and haven't seen for sale, well, never looked for.  Don't want termite food in the house.

During scamdemic, everything was was wrapped in plastic, 2 or 3X :cheesy:

Plastic is bad, paper is good ... what a scam, and y'all fell for it 🙄

We reuse most plastic bags.  Anything not or can't be reused, we burn.  As that is would the municipality does with it, hopefully.  Worse, dump in the sea, and why we burn ... to Save a Turtle.

Municipalities should recycle or burn trash for energy.  All municipalities.  Until then, we'll burn what little trash we generate, in our almost 'smokeless' trash kiln.

Burning plastic? What is wrong with you!? Did you grow up in a 3rd world ghetto? Or do you live in a 3rd world ghetto and adapted well?
